With summer here and being in a 50s mood fashion-wise of late, I have been wearing my hair in a pompadour ponytail style for weeks. It’s really easy, gets my hair off my neck (which has officially reached “mermaid hair” length… it’s at my mid-back now! Part of me wants to chop it off, and part of me is curious to see how long I can grown it! It’s just a pain for 40s ‘dos! Not impossible, but poses more challenges…), and is a look that goes well with lots of my vintage frocks. I posted this video tutorial earlier in the week on YouTube, and thought I’d share it here as well!

What are some of your favorite summertime hairstyles?

So, there’s a hiccup in the blogging scheme for today. I didn’t get the second half of the 50s dress tutorial finished in time to schedule a post today, and now I’m out of aforementioned time. As my sister would say: epic fail. Instead I’m going to distract you with some links, videos and promises of the final post on Monday. Sometimes these things happen… in fact, life just seems to be happening at a rather alarming rate this week. lol.

I get a ton of emails and comments about sewing books I recommend. My lovely friend Megan (I adore her blog so much–she inspires me to no end!) asked me earlier this week to share some of my favorite sewing books in a collaborative post. She’s divided it up into several segments (I’m kind of scared to see how many books we’ve listed between the two of us!), but the first one is up today: Beginner Sewing Books and worth a look!

I also recently uploaded a new thrifting show and tell video to my YouTube channel; and it includes things I don’t think I’ve shown you all here yet. Including some beautiful 50s sweaters I found back in March. It makes me so sad it’s far too warm to even think about sweaters right now–I want to wear them!

Today I thought I’d do something a bit different than my usual cooking/domesticity post. Or rather, something kind of related, but not. hehe! Time for another thrifting video, that is! This time I discuss how I find thrift shops and estate sales, which is a question I have been asked a lot. Since the weekend is just about ready to kick off and spring is starting, this is prime time for gearing up for some serious thrifting or estate sale hunting! Especially since these sorts of places can be great sources not only for clothes and accessories, but household items as well. Just last week I found a darling little metal tray (below) for $1, which I had been coveting since seeing a picture of one used as a magnetic bulletin board. I have yet to convert mine to such (just need to add a picture hook to the back for hanging), but it was a great find that can add a bit of color and kitsch to a wall.

Have you found any great household items lately? What are some of your favorite sources for unearthing thrift shops and estate sales?

I was really delighted by the overwhelming requests for a hair tutorial after I did my outfit post last week. It’s so, so easy–you’re seriously going to laugh at how easy it is! But it’s become my go-to style for most days lately, and the braiding makes it look loads more time-consuming and complicated than it is. This is a great tutorial for those of you who have longer hair too, and I think would even look really pretty on super-curly hair with little wisps coming out of the braid. Enjoy!

Any hairstyles you’re admiring lately? For me it’s all about what I can do with my long hair at the moment. I’m going back and forth between getting a few inches chopped off or just trimmed, as I’m quite in love with the length (mid back!) right now. It’s like the “perfect” length: long so I can braid it easily, but still short enough to curl and do 40s styles with. Now I just need to decide and make an appointment with the gal who cuts my hair!

I’ve been dreaming about doing a series of thrifting-centric videos for my YouTube channel for quite some time–and I finally did it! I wanted to share with you my first effort, which is just an introductory video. I plan on doing lots of other videos like “show and tell” and tips on how to thrift. Between all the comments with great ideas and my own imagination, I am so excited about the possibilities of sharing my love of finding second-hand treasures with you!

Also as a side note: after the landslide of requests (thank you!!!) for a tutorial on the hairstyle in yesterday’s post, I’ve put that on my to-do list. So look for something about a week from now.
