blue eyeshadow and cute 60s French films
Apologies for lack of email replies and posts! My silly computer decided to be inconsiderate and go on the fritz (again). So I’m only just catching up with things now that it’s all fixed! I had a sewing post planned for today, but can’t find a link I need, so hopefully that will go up tomorrow…
[ red tights! and silly poses! ]
Lately I’ve been on an early 60s French film kick. For some reason, despite a brief foray into foreign films several years ago, I managed to never watch any of Jean Luc Goddard’s films, which I know are considered the holy grail of 60s French cinema. So thanks to canceling my cable and getting Netflix instead, I’ve been watching all the Goddard films I can get. Which means I’m mildly obsessed with the early 60s right now; a period I haven’t really given much thought to in awhile. So thanks to the wonderful world of the internet, here are some screencaps from one of the films I recently watched: A Woman is a Woman (or Une Femme Est Une Femme if we want to be correct) from 1961. (Thanks to Anja for hooking me up with where to find some good film stills!)
[ I love the tam with the pompom. ]
[ gorgeous hairstyle and that classic 60s tailored coat! ]

[ so theatrical, yet I adore the fur collar so much! ]
[ I love this whole outfit. I could kick myself for getting rid of a plaid skirt I had just like this! ]
[ cute and classic (and there is that blue eyeshadow). ]
[ I love the "sausage curl" pigtails! ]If you haven’t seen this film, but like foreign movies that have a bit of a flair for the silly, you’ll love this. Besides the adorable Anna Karina and cute early 60s clothes, there is a scene involving using book titles to insult someone (rather than speaking) that is not-to-be-missed! I’ve seen a couple other Goddard films in recent weeks, but what are your favorites (or perhaps, your favorite foreign film)?

anthro inspiration
Longtime readers will know I have a deep and abiding love of Anthropologie. I can’t seem to ever really hate Anthropologie; even on off years (like 2009) when nothing really interested me. This spring I’ve been adoring some of the softer, more nostalgic pieces Anthropologie is carrying; a recent trip to the store downtown last week pretty much sealed the deal for me this season! Plus, it plays into my romantic mood lately–I seem to be gravitating towards a lot of soft colors and styles that are whimsical and pretty at the same time. (Never fear: I haven’t abandoned my love of the 40s; I’m just going through a bit of stylistic expansion and discovery right now!)
No matter than Anthropologie is continually out of my budget; they’ve always been the perfect place to gather a little bit of inspiration for my own projects…
Stripy things! I have been scheming to make a striped skirt for ages, and as of yet have not found the “perfect” fabric (mostly because my idea of said fabric changes from week to week). I love the pockets on this skirt. Striped shorts are also tops on my list of “must makes”. The love the shaping of the front of the bottom pair of shorts. I’m still not a shorts gal, but there are several styles on the site right now (including some printed ones) that are catching my eye!
Blouses of every shape and color. I am especially loving some of the collar details this year! The top on the lower left isn’t really a blouse: it’s actually in the “intimates” section of the website; but after seeing it at the store last week, I think it’d make a lovely bustier style top (maybe paired with a super long skirt…).
Accessories! The cardigan is a lovely, easy idea to add a bit of pizzaz to just about any basics-style sweater. Just add a crocheted collar and some vintage millinery leaves and voila! We won’t even get started on the shoes… lol. I really love this rope belt; would be easy to make a version of, don’t you think?
Finally, dresses. The first two I love for the back views; so often it’s easy to forget about making the back of a garment just as important as the front! The first one has one of my favorites: bows. A big, sash that ties in a bow can be too precious on some designs, which is why I love the balance of simple lines and a neutral palette on this piece. The second has a really fun open/tied back–isn’t that the cutest?! The lobster dress is one of those wacky pieces that I adore so much; I saw it in the store and completely fell in love with the madcap novelty print.
So what things fashion-wise have been inspiring you the past week?

sketchy
( click for larger view.)
This past weekend I finished up yet another of my sketchbooks; this one I had been slowly filling since early Autumn. The beginning is peppered with scribbles about the wedding, lists and other things that were heavily on my mind six months ago. But as of late, I once again started to record garment details and create a visual wishlist of clothes I’d like to make one day. Recently, I had someone ask to take a peek into my sketchbooks, so I’ve pulled a few of my favorite pages from past books:

Interestingly although I’ve taken numerous art classes in the past, I still tend to be very sketchy with my garment drawings. It’s a way for me to work an idea out on paper before it escapes my imagination forever, and things tend to get messy! I have literally a box full of these sketchbooks that I brought with me. Every few months I’ll go back and look through them, culling new ideas or rediscovering old ones. It’s fun to find some themes and motifs continue throughout several books as well; some of which eventually worked their way into a final project or garment design.
Do you like to sketch your ideas out? Or do you record your ideas and inspiration or prepare for a project another way? I’d love to hear how you keep your inspirations!

some inspiration for you

(A photo from our honeymoon in the Florida Keys (this is Key West). The sky was really that blue!)Hello, dear friends! How was your weekend? Sailor Husband and I had a lovely first-Valentine’s Day (as a married couple). We spent the afternoon at the Tampa aquarium, dinner at a fantastic Japanese restaurant, and the evening was topped off watching our hometown hockey team (Washington Capitals) win against the Tampa team! Unfortunately, the camera we brought with us proved to have dead batteries, so no photos. Boo-hoo!
Over the past few weeks, I have discovered a few Flickr photostreams that have some lovely and inspiring vintage images. They have been a source of much inspiration for my daily outfits and sketchbook lately! I hope you enjoy these…

sovereign shootiesAnd yet wanting to be oh so bad! Yesterday I went on a shopping trip with my mom and her best friend, acting as the fashion consultant/personal shopper/token young female (the latter is just a joke! lol!). Despite the allure of many pairs of shoes and a striking yellow jacket, I resisted the urge to buy anything. However, coming on the heels was a notification of some new items at Anthropologie, which hasn’t helped the temptation to go buy some new things. At least, since I cannot afford them right now, I can be inspired by the details!
I’ve also been going through my massive collection (remember this post?) of Anthropologie catalogs. Perhaps it’s because I’m busily trying to pack things up that are littering my bookshelves, but I think it has more to do with lately feeling a bit drained in the creativity department. I’ve rediscovered some amazing styles and have had my inspiration jogged a bit back into action. I also just finished making the 1940s trousers–a completed project always helps get the inspiration mojo back!
My apologies of posts lately have been a bit fluffy. My mind is definitely being overrun with wedding related busyness right now! I’m frantically trying to prep posts for the coming weeks, ‘cause I just know that the Distraction Level is going to only get worse going forward! I pretty much plan on blogging up until the Wednesday before the Big Day, and then taking a three week break while I move and we go on our honeymoon (oh yes: and I “recover” a bit in there–lol!). And then, oooh!!! I’m so excited about the December/January plans I have for this blog!!! But as bad as I am about keeping surprises, I can’t spill the beans just yet…
I hope you all are having a simply splendid week!
