Over the weekend I inquired of the Elegant Musings Facebook fans whether they would be interested in a post on setting up a blogging schedule the the “practical” side of things. While this is not my normal topic here, I seem to get an awful lot of emails about the mechanics of blogging, so I think an occasional post on the topic wouldn’t be out of place!
One of the things that has taken me awhile to get a handle on is setting up a blogging “schedule” or some sort of plan. If I were left totally to my own devices, I’m sure there would be large gaps between posts, and I’d suffer from the same creative “ADD” that I do with sewing and knitting. Blogging is something I enjoy, but need to schedule into things so it doesn’t get pushed aside in favor of other commitments. Basically, I’m one of those people that needs a to-do list to stay on target! Last year I started planning out posts on a weekly basis–outlining what I wanted to post on what days, and topics I’d like to cover. This worked up until I’d forget to pre-plan a week, or something would come up and the tutorial I planned to have up on a certain day wasn’t completed when I needed it. So I switched over to a monthly plan.
Yes, that probably does sound intimidating! But considering I’ve cut back my posting to 4 times a week (I was posting nearly every day for a short time)–if nothing else to preserve my sanity and keep my husband from thinking I’m married to my computer instead of him–it’s a lot less hassle than it sounds. To start with, because I am a very visual/tactile person, I created a little printable calendar to write all my plans on:

Download this pdf here.
I start by scheming about any upcoming, important holidays in the month and whether I have any posts I’d like to tie-in with that. If I have any series planned (such as my Nana’s sewing patterns series), I decide on what day I want those to go up each week; the same goes for the weekly inspiration posts. That already has taken care of two out of the four days I post, which makes deciding on what else to blog about a lot easier and makes me focus on what I really am excited about sharing! For me, since this blog is a bit of everything, I try to alternate between outfit posts, tutorials, beauty how-to’s, etc. on those remaining two days.
One thing the calendar also helps with is setting up a schedule that works with how my weeks go. Mondays are not good days for me in general, so I try to start the week with something easy that I can pre-write days before and don’t have to think too deeply about. This is why generally I post things like finished sewing projects at the start of the week, and leave tutorials towards the middle to end (though I break my own rules constantly!). It just gives me time to start my week offline and slowly work up to catching up with all my online stuff on Monday and Tuesday, without the added pressure of an intensive blog post.
The biggest advantage of this system has been that it saves me a lot of time. Along with this calendar, I also have a little list of post ideas for times when life happens and plans must go by the wayside (but I don’t want to abandon the blog). These can usually be anything from inspiration posts I’ve pre-scanned/pre-written, or outfit posts that I’ve been hoarding for just such an occasion. Even posts like this that are more practical/technical! (Yes, this post was because a sewing project I worked on was a total bomb! Not through my error or the pattern’s–the fabric decided to shred completely. Teaches me to make sure vintage fabric isn’t dry rotting in spots…) Between the two it means I save time and can focus more on what I like doing and sharing here, rather than scrambling to get a post up!
I know there are probably many who already implement such systems, but I hope this was of a little help to a few! I’d love to hear how you plan out your blogging schedule–or if you prefer a different approach.

Great post! Funnily enough, just in the last few months I’ve implemented a schedule of sorts – I use google calendar and colour-code post categories (inspiration / outfit / musings etc) so I can arrange a good ‘spread’ of topics. I sometimes have a rush of inspiration and churn out several blog posts in a week, but I try to hold some back for posting in the “lean” times when I’m feeling flat.

Love your idea of using Google Calendar! That’s part of the reason I’m trying to use a schedule more often than not: otherwise I tend to post a lot when I’m feeling creative and full of ideas, forgetting that there are times when I’m not (or just don’t have the time!).
lol.

If I have lots of stuff to blog all at once. I will write separate entries and ‘auto time’ them to post at regular intervals so when I have a lull there is still some updates. I aim for a min 1 post a week.
Fantastic post! This is something on my mind right now, I enjoy my blog but find that I lose the plot and then don’t know how to get back into it. Actually Charlotte above inspires me as she writes a lot too. Thank you, I will download this little idea and set forth!!
Thanks so much, I really suffered over christmas by getting distracted from our new blog whilst we did festive stuff, getting back into the swing was really tough and I am going to start monthly planning sessions too!!
Interesting! The only time I drafted some sort of schedule was last year with my “project a week” feature, but life got in the way and I panicked towards the end when I realised I had 6 weeks/ projects to catch up on!
I now tend to blog ad hoc, whenever I have inspiration or find a brilliant tutorial online. But I might print out this monthly shedule for March and see how it goes…
I really enjoy the technical posts and the ‘behind the scene’ posts!
And this one the more so because I don’t have a plan myself but really like things neat and ordered. I wish I could plan more ahead, but I’m in the writing business and to talk about something that the readers wont see for another year seems so… dull. So it’s mostly about the day-to-day of writing and author stuff. I wish I could plan ahead more.
you won’t believe how helpful this is. I started my blog last july, shortly after having a baby… right about the time when i had no time and was seriously suffering from sleep deprivation! though its not very successful, I’ve already felt the pressure to compile a random post just to make sure something has been uploaded recently, and i have days where i compile several posts and hastily upload them all as i’m excited to get it seen. Needless to say its haphazard at best! So THANK YOU Casey – i think I shall take a leaf out of your book and get organised! x
I’m so glad this is useful for you, Shelley!
I used to upload things when I had lots of ideas or was very excited about things too, only to realize a few weeks later that I had run out of “exciting” things to post (usually because life got busy–I’m sure you know how that is!
).

Oh it’s so great!! An extra schedule for blogging. I use my regular calendar, because I always have this with me and I need something to write down my ideas. Such a list can be wonderful put in the calendar
Thanks!
Natalie
Oooh, I’m printing that PDF right now. I keep a color-coded to do list for everything, which includes my blog, that I update weekly. But I might try planning things out by the month instead!
That is a great idea- thanks for the pdf!!!!
Very interesting post! I need to try to plan out posts like this, but I’m not very good at it. I tend to post when I have something to post about, and if it’s too much at once I’ll write them up and save them for later. =)
I like what you said about planning the blog according to your personal life. Sometimes I forget I cant do gazillion things at a time and my planing goes wrong!
You also mentioned certain holidays and event and this is something I totally forget and neglect… blog is all about being connected to the world and responding to real life!
Thank you for that
hehe! Yep–I run into that all the time, totally forgetting I don’t have clones of myself to accomplish quite everything I’d like to.
Having a schedule has helped me a lot with trying to cut down on the “creative chaos” that often follows me around as I try to do too much on a daily/weekly basis, and remember that it doesn’t all have to happen right now.

fantastic post….love the technical, organizational side of blogging!!
Next time I wonder why your blog is so much better than mine, I will refer back to this post. Not that my blog is so terrible. Thank you for pointing out that your lovely blog does not come about by accident or luck, but rather, planning and hard work. Like everything else.
Yes–please don’t ever compare your blog to someone else’s!
We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and each blog is a wonderfully unique picture of the person writing it.

I think this is a great idea. I know I have a version of this going loosely in my head, juggling future ideas I’d like to use, but I definitely would like to implement it in writing. One thing I sometimes do is start posts in draft mode whenever the fancy for a new topic strikes if I already know I have some ideas for it, and then save it in draft mode. I may not get back to it for months, but it can be a real help. Not that it helps me schedule my posts! lol
When I make it through all of the hullabaloo of selling our condo and buying a house, I am definitely going to revisit this post and add a little more discipline in my schedule.
I too have a ton of posts in my drafts folder–it sure has helped me keep some ideas plotted out or saved the day when I needed a post, but didn’t have anything. hehe. What I would do without it, I don’t know!
Best of luck with all the move and house-selling upheaval, btw! I can’t wait to see more details on your new home.

Gee, I guess I needed this. I don’t plan. It takes me soooo long to write a post, I get over concerned about my wording. Also, I mostly only post sewing projects. Many times I have thought about sharing my vintage apron collection, my favorite recipes ,etc. but am concerned it would be boring to others. Maybe I need to branch out a bit. What do you think? I am also challenged by the technical part of things. Thanks Casey.
Oooh! A vintage apron collection!? Do share!
YES!!!! I think you should post about some of your other interests if you’re so inclined. I know I’d love to read those posts just as much as your sewing posts.

Thanks for sharing your blog posting schedule. I have been contemplating starting a blog myself so any advice or tips you can share would be greatly appreciated!
Great post and thanks for the pdf!!! I definitely plan out posts (usually weekly) though I often think about what I really want to accomplish in any given month at the beginning. I go of course A LOT! hehehehe. I’m not very good about ‘scheduling’ posts–meaning I’ve got the idea but I only do it when it’s about to go live. Which is great if I have the energy or haven’t had too much wine
I need to get better at having a few back-up interesting posts to share! Thanks for sharing!
meant to say that I go OFF course (i.e. don’t follow my plan) a lot!
I have a similar schedule, except I aim for only three times a week as opposed to four. (Maybe someday!) I sit down every Sunday and write my posts, then queue them up for the week. If I miss doing that on Sunday then I’ll catch up the next day and do the same thing.
That’s a great tip about writing all the posts for the coming week! I’ve done that a bit too, and try to get as much done as I can over the weekend. It’s the looong posts, like the tutorials, that always trip me up though!
lol. One day I’ll have this down to a science… maybe!
(Who am I kidding?!

This is a pretty good idea. I need to get on top of organizing my blogg too.
http://madnessanmusings.blogspot.com/2012/02/monday-madness.html
great ideas to improve my time management.
I love blogging, too, so I do budget time for it.
Usually, I try to have enough pictures and ideas for a week in advance so I can write a post every couple days, but your monthly system is even better.
on a completely unrelated note, I LOVE all the home decor pics on your Pinterest boards.
We are definietly on the same wavelength with home aesthetics.
cheers!
So glad you enjoyed this post and are enjoying my Pinterest board too!
It’s addictive… hehe!

When I was blogging regularly I scheduled everything through Google Calendar, I figured it was one less piece of paper for my loving husband to accidentally throw away, lol I love your system though!
oh my.. i never ever thought of something like planning posts.. and now that you said it, it kind of sounds logical.. big question is – can i pull that off? or, should i even bother.. cause, you blog about lot of different stuff, my blog is mostly personal style blog, i take pics of my outfits, and new things i’ve sewn, and that’s it.. not that i know what i gonna end up wearing next day.. on the other hand, i planned doing some baking related posts, that;s where planning things in advance can be helpful.. so, i’m printing this schedule
thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing! When posting every day in december until christmas I was forced to think a lot about blogging and a good mix of things. I usually post three times a week and since january I have established a kind of schedule: mondays are for inspirations and vintage patterns/craft books, wednesdays for wips and fridays usually focus on some sewing or knitting technique or something knitting related. As I have a lot of different things on my plate I finally succombed to monthly planning. I still try to cram everything in one very similar calendar, perhaps I should start with one for each.
thanks for sharing, this is a very insightful post!
Your way of being organised is so much more beautiful than mine! At the moment I just have a lot of scrappy bits of paper- think this has inspired me to pull things together and get a bit more organised. Beautiful calendar page!
This is great! Thanks for sharing.
That’s amazing! I kind of just blog randomly at the minute, but I’d like to start seeing it as more of a planned thing, get a little more structure and hopefully make my blogs a little more readable!
xx
Very interesting! Before I started blogging, I thought about the blogs that I enjoy reading the most and realized that regular posting was one thing (among many) that they have in common. So I decided that I would make sure that I post regularly. I have a full time job and can only sew on some weekends, so I came up with themes for posts during the week that I can do even if I don’t get any sewing done. For example, every Wednesday I post about a project that is waiting for me in my queue. And every Friday I post a question about sewing. And the following Thursday I post a summary of everyone’s answers to my Friday question. Then, I can post about my weekend sewing on the weekends. Without this system, my blog would have languished and died ages ago…
This is a great post – thank you! I had one of those ‘a-ha!’ moments while reading it – it just seems to make so much sense! Think I’ll give scheduling a go. Thanks for the inspiration.
Just thought I’d let you know I was so impressed with this not only did I implement it but I popped it in my latest blog post, hope you don’t mind me stealing a photo of you, I thought the blogging schedule wasn’t as pretty as you!
Thank you so much for mentioning the post–I’m so delighted it was super helpful for you!!!!
(And of course I don’t mind you using a picture of me… *blushes* )

I enjoyed this post a lot! I struggle with keeping a regular posting schedule on my blog, which is unfortunate because I use it to promote my articles (I’m a journalist). I love blogging (and I love my job), but sometimes posting just feels too much like work (because it is work) and I’d rather pursue something different that does not involve sitting in front of a computer. I think mapping out a schedule will help me get into a routine that it’s manageable and not too energy-consuming. Thanks for your tips!
Great post Casey! I’ve never tried a monthly blog schedule, but I think I might just give this a try! I’ve tried to do schedules in the past, but I usually only stick to it for about a week or so. I think having posts planned in advanced will give me more time to do some other creative things. Thanks for your insight!
Thank you for such a great post, posting regularly is a big problem for me as I just can’t seem to do it, so I’ll definitely be trying to plan ahead from now on!
I know I’m a bit late, but this is wonderful! Thank you so much for the tips and the calendar idea. I just started blogging seriously, and it’s been a bit scattershot so far. This should really help!
How do you schedule posts to post automatically? I’ve tried the email-timed thing on blogger, but it’s not really conducive to good formatting, and I’m stumped how to get it done. So far I’ve been making drafts and posting them from my phone, but I’d love a fully automatic way.
This is so helpful – I have just started a blog in the last couple of weeks and was thinking about buying a great big diary to plan my posts in, but this may work better for me! I have a busy life with four little kids so I am going to have to really organise my time better. I’d much rather be making things and blogging about them than housework and cooking dinner at the moment! Thanks again!
I’m so behind in blog reading and blog creating that it is terrible!!! oh goodness.
Hey Casey!
so this is something really helpful that will get me back into the swing of things again!
Thank you so much for posting this, it is so helpful. I am fairly new to blogging and have gotten really lazy with my own blog
Your blog is stunning and your outfits never fail to amaze me!
Have a lovely week.
xx
Thanks for this post, Casey! I sort of sketch out a week or two in advance, but I’ve been trying to become more disciplined in my approach to blogging… I love that you made a printable calendar, it feels “special” to use it.
Thanks.
