new family member

Interrupting our usual programming… Saturday started out bright and early with us piling into the car and taking a long drive out to western North Carolina to meet and finish the paperwork for this little darling:

Meet Maverick! He’s brand-new to our family, and still a relatively young puppy. SH and I had been mulling over a dog for some time, but had put it off because of SH’s wacky schedule of late and the fact that I have never had a dog before. (I’ve been a cat and rabbit girl up until now!) For a time we looked into getting a puppy from a breeder, but adopting from a rescue made more sense for us (Mr. Freckles is from a rescue too). It took a few months of looking, since puppies are notoriously popular at rescues and shelters, but when we saw Maverick, we knew we had met our new family member! (Anyone who knows me well also is aware that Top Gun is one of my top ten favorite movies, so the perfection of a dog named Maverick wasn’t lost on us! Yes, he’s going to get a military ID tag with his name printed on it for his collar… I’m a bit of a goof, what can I say?) The rescue isn’t quite sure what breed he is–most likely a Lab mix–but he is going to be a big boy when he is fully grown. His story is a sad one, like a lot of dogs that end up at shelters: he and his siblings were abandoned, found and taken to a high-kill shelter. The rescue took him and his siblings in and placed them in a foster home, which is where they were when we found his listing. I’m so glad we were able to bring him home with us–and both his siblings are in the process of being adopted as well!

The first day was a bit rocky, which is not surprising since the long drive home and then being in a new place were a lot for a puppy to take in. But he’s really sweet and already following SH and I around! Even Mr. Freckles seems to be warming up to the new addition and has been curiously checking out all the chew toys that have suddenly appeared. I can’t wait until he’s a bit bigger and we can take him on hikes and have him meet some of our friend’s dogs!

I would say he’s got a lot of labrador in him. And he’s going to be a very big boy. Look at the size of those paws. He’s certainly a handsome chap. Welcome, Maverick

What a gorgeous pup! I used to have a rabbit and my Yorkshire terrier used to sit in the cage with him! It’s nice to see them getting on! A happy ending to a unhappy start in life. Sue x

Aww he’s sooo cute! I’m glad to hear his other siblings are being re-homed too, it makes me sick when people dump animals and mistreat them, at least he will have a loving and happy home with you.
I would say he is mostly a Labrador too if not all labrador but you won’t know for sure until he is fully grown.
Good choice of name too!

Awwww he is so cute! We have yellow lab (a gift from our friends, who breed them) and he is the delight of our lives! He is 2 this June and it seems just like yesterday we brought him home as a 10 week old bundle of energy and love. You’ll love dog ownership!

What a good decision to take a dog from an animal home. Our first dog was from an animal home too. We got her when she was two years old. Our second dog is from a family who didn’t want her anymore because of divorce. She was seven years when we got her. Both second hand dogs didn’t make any problems. And I think it’ll be similar with your dog. Congratulations and many happy hours with your sweet puppy.

I just got a dog from a shelter too, sent all the way from Romania to Norway! She’s a bichon mix, a small girl, and is just the most fantastic dog. I LOVE it when people choose rescue animals over breeders, so a huge congrats to you and SH for choosing Maverick! I’m sure he’ll enrich your lives and brighten your days, just like my dog does for my family ;)

Awww, he’s so cute! I hope the little cutie gets used to his new home with you guys very soon! I’ve never been much of a dog-person myself (to much work and I like cats better :P ), but I can appreciate them! I look forward for tales of him growing up.

We just got a Yorkie last year and has been so much fun having around. The unconditional love and loyalty dogs show is amazing. She even has a sleeping mat in my sewing room where she will now take a snooze while I sew. Enjoy Maverick he is adorable!

Super excited that you adopted instead of buying from a breeder – thank you!! I volunteer at a shelter and it is amazing the dogs that get abandoned or overlooked. Hope you have a better second day, he’s adorable!

Welcome to the world of dog ownership – your life will never be the same! I have always been a cat person but we rescued a 2 yr old newfoundland about 4 months ago and I can’t imagine my life without her! Everyone says there’s something about having a dog that is so different than a cat. I never believed it because I love my cats so much. Well, it’s true. A lot more work but their little faces and personalities are wonderful. Enjoy!

Sooooo CUTE! He definitely looks all or mostly lab to me. What a sweet sweet face. We got a puppy a year and a half ago, so I’ve been there recently. Keep in mind that you won’t get much work or sewing done for the next few months, but it will be so so worth it. My girl is such a wonderful friend and pal to hang out with, all the puppy frustrations are but distant (but fun and funny) memories. Good luck with your new baby!

Awww he’s a cutie pie! So nice to know his siblings are getting adopted, too. Puppies are crazy but so worth it! I never had a dog before ours and now I can’t imagine my life without one. They really are some of the best friends you can have. :)

Oh he’s adorable! That’s so exciting for you :) My sister has a Lab-Newfoundland cross and I lived with them when he was a puppy; labs are highly entertaining especially during the “gangly” phase when their legs are super long but they also love to chew things in our experience…so make sure the vintage is safely tucked away! We let Bear stay in overnight once at Christmas and he ate an entire bag of individually wrapped Campinos…he wasn’t moving much for the next 36 hours…oi.

he is perfect. welcome to my world! When my son passed away, we inherited his two dogs. One a female black lab (the perfect little girl) and the other, a male, a yellow lab mix. Your pup reminds me of Auggie as a puppy. He is now 12 years old and 120 pounds of guard dog. My days begin with walking and end with walking. They are a great comfort and keep is entertained. Best of luck with Maverick!!!

Oh he’s gorgeous! I got my first ever dog three and a half years ago and haven’t looked back since! They’re so loveable. Bear (very aptly named) is now the same size as me and weighs just 2 stone less than me, but is so gentle and mushy it’s ridiculous! Get ready for a great big bundle of fun, I’m sure you’re all going to have a great time together!

Thank you so much for adopting a rescue. I don’t know why people think they must have a purebred from a breeder. You saved a life :)

Many congratulations on the addition of wee Maverick–an excellent name choice! I love that he is a rescue dog, as well. Our cat, Sita, was a rescue cat; she was found wandering the streets of Edinburgh, though it was clear she’d been part of a family before. I wish you, SH, Mr. Freckles, and the handsome Maverick many happy years together! : )

Jenn February 27, 2012 at 12:18

He’s beautiful Casey, but looking at his face and the length of his fur, I think he may be a bit Newfoundland. Yikes! But don’t worry, big dogs rule. This one may get big enough to ride on…

Owning a dog is so different from meeting one or babysitting one. We were so surprised at just how much of a family member our dogs became.

That being said, my partner and I are rabbit people all the way. I 100% support seeing Mr. Freckles pictures on your blog.

Good on you for rescuing him – I will only ever get animals from a shelter. I’d say he’s mostly lab, that’s obvious, but looks like there could be some staffy or even – yikes – mastiff in there. It can be hard to tell with puppies though. He’s absolutely beautiful!

Kristen February 27, 2012 at 14:34

CUTE! I’m a total dog person and puppies are the best! So happy to hear he’s a rescue =)

I also cannot get over how gorgeous Mr. Freckles is!
