colette sewing handbook

This seems to be the bumper month for new sewing books, doesn’t it? Which I can’t argue with—the ongoing popularity of sewing thrills me to no end! I have to admit I have been in the loop for some time about Sarai Mitnick’s progress on her new sewing book: The Colette Sewing Handbook. So I was delighted when she approached me about participating in the blog book-tour for the new book. I tested a couple patterns from the book earlier in the year, and knew from the start that you all would love this book as much as I do. Sarai was kind enough to allow me a sneak peek at the book and a chance to share some of my thoughts with you.

I’m sure most of you are already familiar with Sarai’s wildly popular Colette Patterns line; I know I’m an avid fan of her vintage-inspired styles that feature excellent instructions. I was excited when I heard she was writing a book, because I knew there was sewing knowledge, tips and tricks that she couldn’t include in the patterns that I would love to learn from her!

The approach of The Colette Sewing Handbook is unlike many other beginner-to-intermediate level sewing books out there. Sarai takes a holistic approach to the sewing process: from learning how to define your own style, to techniques essential for sewing, and gathering inspiration to plan your sewing project. It’s a wonderfully refreshing way of looking at sewing, and similar to the way I view the handcraft. Of course, each page is full of lush color photographs, illustrating her distinct vintage aesthetic and detailing how-to’s—a must for any successful sewing tome, in my opinion!

I was most impressed by the extensive sections on preparing your pattern (from tracing to cutting out and marking), fitting (learning how to fit and common fit alterations), and fabric (learning about the drape, characteristics of various fibers). Each is thoroughly covered for a sewing book of this type, yet never gets too technical so as to overwhelm the beginning sewer. There are a total of five patterns included with the book, which range from a darling scalloped-hem skirt, to a lovely dress with a waterfall peplum. (Sizes range from a 33″ to 46″ bust.)

Sarai’s book, however, is not just your standard sewing manual. One of my favorite sections she has kindly allowed me to share with you all: her thoughts on “Editing for Your Style”; part of the extremely helpful chapter two (titled “A Thoughtful Plan”), which also covers gathering inspiration and strategy for your sewing and wardrobe. I know many of us struggle sometimes with identifying our style when it comes to fashion–it can be a mysterious creature. But Sarai’s organic, approachable method outlines some basic methods for assessing style proclivities, as well as dressing for body-type and your lifestyle.

When I initially tested the patterns for the book, I made the Truffle dress and Meringue skirt. Unfortunately, as I’m in the middle of a move (unpacking now!), I haven’t got proper picture of either. But both the patterns were a snap to put together; I don’t think I spent more than a day on each (if that!). As with Sarai’s pattern line, the instructions are extremely well thought-out, aided by illustrations, and most of these projects will delight both beginners and more seasoned seamstresses. I know I’m eager to make a few other designs in the book, and play with some of the possibilities these basic designs offer!

Which is something I love about the patterns: they’re neither too simple or overly complex. This leaves a lot of room for the imagination and the seamstress to add her own signature look. Whether by opting for meshing multiple fabrics into one design, altering the hem of a skirt, adding decorative cording or sequins to another… The possibilities for changes and variations is endless!

The Colette Sewing Handbook is available from the Colette Patterns website, Amazon and other fine book retailers. This would make the perfect gift for a sewing friend (or yourself) this holiday season too! Be sure to visit the Colette Patterns site for more information on the book as well as the pattern line.

Thank you, Sarai, for asking me to help test the patterns and participate in the book tour. Congratulations again on your book!

I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this book! I’ll probably order it after Christmas. =) I’m especially interested in the part about building your own style and choosing what to make for your wardrobe. I tend to be really bad at those types of things. =)

I got my first Colette pattern (Crepe) in the mail a few weeks ago and was so impressed with how detailed the pattern instructions are! I haven’t been able to start yet, because I’m out of tracing paper.

I am so glad I bought this book, and have enjoyed reading through it as I can. I have’t tried any of the patterns yet, but hopefully after the first of the year, I will start on that. Sarai’s style of writing is very comforting, and she offers lots of good information and descriptions. It’s like having a friend who is really good at something help you try the same things. This would be a great addition to anyone’s sewing library.

I ordered the (signed!) book from the Colette Patterns website along with 2 patterns as part of their holiday book bundle this past Friday. I’d love to start seeing some finished versions of the patterns.

P.S. There’s a message under the comments section saying that your version of CommentLuv is no longer supported. Not sure if you noticed that so I figured I’d point that out! :)

I love this book. And my favorite chapter is the chapter that you’re talking about, the one that describes selecting your personal style, and doing a good analysis of what types of clothes makes you happy and fits your own style. It’s definitely true that you can be drawn to certain types of fabrics that in your minds eye would look great on you, but in reality doesn’t fit well. For me, I’m drawn to romantic looks, ruffles and lace, but what I end up liking wearing the most is geometric prints.

I find something else to love about this book each time i pick mine up. I’m thrilled with Sarai’s approach to sewing and personal style. Makes me (almost) wish I didn’t already own all the Colette patterns, I’d for sure be buying them now!

Oh, man. I haven’t yet bought any Colette patterns (they’re a *bit* pricier than I can justify), but I think Sarai’s new book has to go on my Christmas list. She seems like one of the sanest sewing gurus out there, striking a great balance by promoting both creativity/personal style and precision/good technique. A much-needed perspective for a new seamstress who’s lost in a sea of advice. :)
