October 2011

Please give a warm welcome to Stephanie! She’s the lovely and talented gal behind The Girl with the Star Spangled Heart—a truly lovely blog where she discusses everything from her favorite mid-century musicals to sewing! Today she’s showing off a gorgeous jumper she made recently; this pattern has been on my to-do list for awhile and I’m inspired! – ♥ Casey

I love the movie Sabrina (1954)! While I envy her post-transformation Parisian wardrobe, this pre-transformation dress also stole my heart:

When I spotted Simplicity 3673, I knew that it would be great for replicating this look.

My version is made from a lovely wool cotton blend that, while it isn’t an exact replica of the costume, really captured the feel of the fabric. It’s a lovely plaid of black, grey, dark blue and hunter green.

Since Sabrina is in black and white, I got to cook up my own color scheme. I chose to pair it with a dark green shirt although I think it would go great with loads of other colors. I’m really pleased with how it turned out!

My two biggest issues with it are that the modifications I made to the blouse changed the neckline more than I’d have liked and it’s dry clean only. I still love it though and plan on wearing it loads this fall and winter.

Well, my dears, the time has come for me to say my goodbye! We’re officially leaving Florida in a couple days, and the internet is getting cut off soon. So that means no more blogging for me until I get a bit more settled and our belongings are delivered. (Which, if anyone is inclined: prayers/good thoughts about that would be appreciated. Someone messed up our paperwork and we aren’t sure when we’ll be getting the household goods delivered. This has pretty much been the tenor for this move: one small crisis after the other… lol.) I’m going to miss you all so much! But, I do have some pretty fantastic guest bloggers filling in next month–I’m so excited to share their posts (and am very thankful they are helping!). I just know you’ll love what is coming over the course of November. Things will keep fairly regular, and I do have a couple pre-written posts of my own coming up (including some exciting book reviews), and just might pop in a couple times with little moving-related updates. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly from here on out; it’s been a bumpy ride the past week, so I’ll be glad when it’s all over and I can unpack and stop living out of a suitcase (the movers came Wednesday, so I have been living out of a tiny suitcase since then… Which is slightly tricky when you have to pack for two totally different climates. lol.)!

  • Gertie (and readers) muse over the shape-shifting and societal ramifications of the bra throughout history (my fashion history-nerd self loved this!).
  • Great tips for washing silk scarves!
  • These roasted almonds with honey and thyme look so tasty…
  • Ever wonder about the “49er” jacket–a perennial favorite among vintage types? Solanah gives an explanation.

Apologies for the shortness of this week’s list, but I have to get back to cleaning! Wishing you all the loveliest of weekends and Novembers! “See” you soon!

After the technical problems of the last CSSA party post, I’m so glad I’m able to bring you another to share the additional circle skirts—they’re all knock-outs! Once again my head is swimming with ideas for other circle skirts I want to make… You know what inspires me even more than all the different variations on the circle skirt? Seeing so many ladies happy with something they sewed themselves! There was a great mix of experienced and beginner sewers that took part in this sew-along, and I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was that this caught so many people’s fancy! You all are so creative—thank you ever so much for making this sew-along such a roaring success!

10.24.11 | easy weekend
tshirt: Loft | trousers: made by me | telephone cord bag: vintage | scarf: thrifted | saddle shoes: Muffy’s | belt: thrifted | bracelets: thrifted | sunglasses: H&M

This outfit is a couple weekends old, but I thought I’d share it with you since I had the pictures sitting on my harddrive! I’ve worn this outfit (or variations on it) more times than I can count of late. It’s comfortable and works for just about any occasion—plus all the pieces I can easily wash (an upside when you’re a klutz like me!). For some odd reason too people seem to instantly see the 1940s inspiration behind the look, despite it being a bit of a mish-mash of things! I honestly have gotten more compliments on this outfit, which I always find rather humorous because it’s so darn simple… Just goes to show you it’s not the complicated looks that really catch people’s eye!

What is one of your favorite go-to outfits?
