picnic braids

I don’t know what it is about this braid configuration, but it seems like the perfect ‘do for a day you’re wearing a pretty sundress and off on a picnic! Which I think is something I need to put on my summer to-do list. This hairstyle may look familiar to those who watched the Romantic Braided Updo video; it’s a similar style and essentially a variation on that. However, I got a lot of requests after sporting this ‘do a few times in outfit photos, so I hope you’ll enjoy! (Just remember to tuck all the ends in… I missed a couple! Yikes!)

I also posted an everyday, vintage inspired make up tutorial last week on my YouTube channel as well. I’m sure you’ve already seen it, but if not I’ve added it below. I have gotten many, many emails from busy moms and students pressed for time, wondering what I consider the “essentials” for a vintage make up look. This video includes the few steps and products that I think are key for conveying that retro/vintage face, without spending loads of time on applying products. It’s also the look I sport most days–as much as I love playing with makeup, I don’t always have the time!

I hope you enjoy these! I’ve been recording a few new tutorials here and there the past week as I finally got my video camera up and working and have access to a newer version of my editing program. It’s making things about a hundred times easier and my inclination to actually record these has shot through the roof! lol. I’ll be posting some more throughout the next month, including a little crafty how-to (hopefully!).

What hairstyles have been catching your eye lately? If you have found any pictures that are inspiring you, I’d love to see them!

Casey, thanks for such a lovely hair tutorial! It’s gorgeous. You look so pretty.
I like all your hair tutorial but as I have quite long and heavy (can I use this word speaking about hair??) I can’t try all of them – well, I can try it but you can imagine the result :D :D
In addition I don’t do such hairstyles much often I like wearing it just how they are, just well combed… so, I think my hair aren’t just used to it:)) if it is possible…

But I really like this tutorial http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/2011/03/video-easy-romantic-updo/ as the hair are divided it’s much easier for me to fix it.

Well, my “problem” is that I (half great example of Slavic type – fait hair, pale skin and so on, and half Germanic type – quite similar as Slavic) look a bit like a Tyrolean girl with the braids:)) but I like it and since I saw the tutorial I’ve tried it many times. And it looked always good.

I will surely try this one too!
It looks fantastic, really. And gorgeous. I am looking forward to trying it.

Have a nice sunny day, Casey!

Casey, you have the best hair in the world! All your hair tutorial have hair do’s that are so pretty. My hair won’t stay up. I tried to do the bun with the clips and couldn’t get it to stay. Oh well, some of us got it and some of us don’t! Hehe

Gina, that’s exactly my problem. But these tutorials – today’s one and the one I put a link in my comment are bit different as you have to divided your hair in parts. So, they aren’t as heavy as when you try to make some hairstyle with all your hair together.

Hi Casey,
I just watched your make up video I was interested as I’m a vintage girl literally! I do love how you did this for us. I noticed you don’t use blush. I’m very pale and have always used blush now is there a reason why you don’t? Just curious. Nan

Gorgeous as always! I tried the Romantic Updo out a couple weeks ago and loved it- so I will definitely be giving this one a go!

these tutorials are great, casey (as always)! i decided to take a break from work (heehee) and primp a bit, since i hadn’t done any make-up or anything today. i’ve been really lazy lately and generally don’t do make-up except for concealer most days. unless i’m going out. i’d like to change that, though! at least so i can get used to doing some of these techniques like eyeliner. i think i need to buy some better eyeliner too. i have some cheapo stuff in a tube, but it washes off pretty easily and messes up. i also tried gel liner, but i obviously need more practice before i try that again! also read through your make-up recommendations and was happy to see some quite affordable ones on your list! after the mascara i used for years is not sold in most stores anymore (max factor 2000 calorie) i’ve been on the lookout for a good mascara. i’ve purchased three so far and none of them work very good. even threw one away in a fit of rage! :) anyways, all that said, i feel so pretty now! i also put my hair up in a variation of the 1960s chignon you put up awhile back. and can i take this opportunity to say you look super adorable in that video where you talk about going to second-hand stores (the one where you are in the cute ’60s frock and chignon updo!) And now that I’ve talked (typed) your head off, I better get back to work! xo

Oh you’re making me wish I didn’t just cut off all my hair this weekend! But a quick look at Arizona Muse in the j crew catalog reminds me why I love short hair in the summer:

BTW isn’t here name just perfect? Arizona Muse sounds like a heroine in drugstore paperback. Love it!

Great tutorials again Casey :) . Both such pretty looks.
It was interesting to see the steps you take to achieve such a pretty, natural day look. I’ve got the gel eyeliner (MAC), but even after a lesson with a makeup artist (and watching your tutorial) I still can’t seem to master it! I think I’m just going to have to practice HEAPS (lol) ;)

Totally gorgeous as always! Your hair is simply marvelous! I do adore your make-up tutorials as well and bought the “creme eyeliner” thanks to you. I had no idea the stuff existed. It’s soooooo cool! I think I might need more in another color.

Oddly, I’ve been considering short hair. Like really short. I don’t know. The idea of summer coming up and the heat and well, keeping the hair off my neck sounds so appealing. What’s even weirder is that I’m drawn to the short wispy hairstyles of the 70s/80s found on the “illustrated” covers of sewing patterns. Maybe I’ve just seen too many lately, but I’m gettin that itch. Can’t wait to see your other tutorials too! They are always sooo helpful and informative.

xoxo,
Sunni

Casey- I LOVE these tutorials!! I’m going to give the hair one a try this afternoon, even though my hair is just barely past my shoulders. I always prefer to wear my hair up and out of my way and this is such an adorable look!

Oh and you clearly need no makeup whatsoever (jealous!) but I love what you did with the look regardless. I just wish I could pull off red. I think my lips are a tad too big for it so I stick with a pink color. What brand eyeshadow did you use?

I’m still drawn to the looks of the 40s like Bacall, Hayworth, Rogers and Lake. If only my hair would cooperate…

I love the vintage makeup tutorial Casey ~ thanks for doing it! I am glad to see that I have almost got it right ~ just need to get me an eyebrow pencil and liquid eyeliner…. I have a cream eyeliner that I use but no matter how hard I try, I simply cannot get it to wing out without smudging all over the side of my eye ten seconds later… So liquid it is!

My girls and I watched your videos and we really enjoyed them, Casey. I wish I had the hair for these lovely hairstyles. Perhaps I can modify them some for my hair and I can practice them on some of my girls. :) I’m getting better with my make-up, though I definitely need more practice with the “wing”. Thanks, Casey!

Lovely Video :D

Tried it today and went quite well considering it was my first attempt and I was kinda in a hurry (took me about an hour, nonetheless)! This hairstyle also works for heavy, curly, 1-yard-long hair, tried it ;D

You are so insanely pretty <3

Best, Eva

Thank you so much for the makeup tutorial! I’m pretty terrible at makeup, and most mornings I’m so rushed to get ready for work that I just sort of smear things on my face and dash out the door. I love vintage style, and I can’t wait to try this tomorrow :)
