Have you ever looked into the depths of your closet and felt like you have nothing to wear? As though you continually pull out the same half-dozen pieces over and over and wear them in predictable combinations? I have definitely felt in a bit of a style rut lately with my own wardrobe. Despite having quite a few vintage and self-made pieces that are truly pretty and fun to wear, I often feel like I have been pulling out the same pieces over and over and not mixing them in inspiring ways. So that is where Kendi’s 30 for 30 challenge comes in! It’s no new phenomena–she’s done four of these thirty day, thirty garment challenges (and so have plenty of other stylish people!). But I just discovered this shortly after the first of the year, and have been fascinated by the idea.
Why am I doing this? Perhaps it’s a creative exercise in less is more. Or maybe I want to prove to myself that if I had to downsize and pack away the majority of my closet, I could still put together pretty outfits with very little. Still quite possible is that I have spent far too many late nights looking at all the 30 for 30 participants and thinking “darn… this looks fun!”.
I want to learn how to mix things with more ease and look past obvious combinations and try and pick up on some less-conventional ones. Utilizing my accessories stash is another big reason for taking part in this; all those scarves, hats and belts I’ve thrifted over the years lying forgotten? Well, time to pull those out to add some zing to an ensemble. It’s taken me about a week to figure out what to include, whittle down my list of garments and refine the combinations a bit. (Yes, I’m being an obsessive control freak and have plotted out 30 outfits in a spreadsheet already. Just in case I get stuck in a rut halfway through!)
Looking at the pile of clothes that are to become my wardrobe next month makes me realize I have a definitely color scheme going on. While I’m visually attracted to bright colors, I find myself more often buying things in medium shades of blue and pink, with a good dose of black and white. At least for the summertime; my winter wardrobe seems to have a few more bright options. But I think that is something telling about my closet: I prefer soft, classic combinations of color. Things that evoke the idea of fuzzy old photographs and faded fabrics. Romantic. Vintage. Feminine. That sums up my essential aesthetic in a nutshell!
Kendi has included a list of rules for her 30 for 30 challenge; of which I think are excellent. But, I have decided to modify this a bit (of course). Firstly, I am allowing myself 3-4 thrift/estate sale jaunts in the next month, though the focus will be on thoughtful purchases. Things that will work in my wardrobe and I need (like some of the worn-out basics I am in dire need of replacing). I can’t wear any clothes I find until after the 30 for 30 challenge though. I also plan on sewing garments during this time (you didn’t think I could go a month without sewing, did you?!), but again they can’t be worn as an all-day outfit until after the challenge.
So now that April is almost here, I’m gearing up to get started on this project! Though I won’t be starting until Monday, April 4 because I’m a bit nutty about starting things at the beginning of the week. Which means that I won’t be done with this challenge until around my birthday! (Kind of a neat way to kick off 26, huh?) I also don’t plan on doing daily outfit posts, although I will be documenting each outfit photographically. I’m going to do little compilation posts of looks from the previous 3-4 days; just so things don’t become a bit too overrun with outfit posts around here!
Have you ever tried an outfit challenge like this? Got any tips? Or perhaps you might join me in this challenge for the month of April? The more, the merrier I always say!

Mena, the author of one of my favorite blogs: The Sew Weekly, recently approached me about participating in a collaborative project she’s running right now: A Common Thread. A group of talented seamstresses were tasked with the challenge of using 4 yards of lace Mena sent each of us to use as we wished on a creation of our own choosing. Funnily enough, every gal has thus far chosen a top to use the lace on–and I was no exception! Since I’ve been itching to make a 1910s blouse, I decided to pull my old copy of Folkwear’s Armistice Blouse pattern out of my stash and use the lace in conjunction with that. I love how the blouse turned out–despite the fact that the weather totally did not cooperate the day Sailor Husband was available for taking photos. A big thank you to Mena for asking me to participate in this, and be sure to stop by The Sew Weekly to read my post on the project!

Now, of course having completed this, I’m thinking “what to sew next?”! Should I make a hat from Lauren’s pattern, or perhaps a navy blue version of my favorite trousers? I am definitely leaning towards the hat–now just to chose fabric!

Remember how I promised to host another giveaway real soon? I was thinking of saving this until my birthday (in early May), but decided to have the giveaway now, because… well, I thought it would be super fun to end March and start April on a high note! I was recently going through my vintage pattern stash and came across a few patterns that I thought I’d pass on to others who might enjoy them. So I’m offering three vintage patterns in this giveaway (but you can only enter for and win one). I tried to select patterns that covered a wide range of sizes, so hopefully there is one for just about everyone. Please note that these patterns are actual vintage, and although I’ve checked to make sure the pieces and instructions are present, they do show some wear-and-tear from age (but are still usable!).
Pattern A: 1940s Simplicity #1025; bust 32″, hip 35″. Misses two piece dress/soft suit wit two sleeve variations. (Please note that this is an unprinted pattern. Also: the envelope is a bit tattered, but all the pieces and instructions are usable!)
Pattern B: 1950s Advance #8191; waist 28″, hip 38″. Misses sheath or a-line skirts.
Pattern C: 1960s Simplicity #6281; bust 39″, hip 43″. Half-size “basic” dress pattern with neckline and sleeve variations.
Want to enter? It’s super easy and I’m excited to say that this giveaway is open to all readers–not just those in the US and Canada! Be sure to read the rules below before leaving a comment…
- Leave a comment on this post telling me which one of the three patterns being offered you’d like to win and why.
- This giveaway is open to all readers.
- You may only enter once for one pattern.
- Comment entries will be accepted until Sunday, April 3 at 10pm EST.
- Three winners will be chosen for each pattern and announced Monday morning. That’s right–each pattern will go to one winner!
So tell me: which would you choose and why? Do you envision a certain fabric or trim for your chosen pattern? Good luck!!!

A big thank you to all the lovely gals who filled in for me last week while my mom was visiting! It was truly a treat to have such a group of talented ladies and seeing their spring-themed posts. I’m really ready for springtime now! My mom and I had a great week filled with lots of thrifting (and some truly amazing finds–more on that later), a fun afternoon tea at our favorite local tea room, and even some sewing! The highlight project was making some aprons from (thrifted) men’s dress shirts, using instructions from Vintage Notions. They turned out pretty cute! Now I just have to get back into the swing of things; if you’re waiting for an email from me, my apologies–I should hopefully get back to you soon!

Somehow, we managed to go an entire week without really taking any photos; I think these outfit pictures were the only ones that were taken during Mom’s visit. We were just so busy chatting and doing things that the cameras really never came out! But I’m glad I did get some shots of this dress; it’s a new favorite that Trashy Diva sent me recently. I already own one TD dress that I adore, and picked out this one to fill a gap I realized I had in my closet: a solid color, classic 1950s inspired shirtwaist dress! I’ve already worn it a handful of times because it’s one of those great pieces that can be dressed up or down–plus it’s practical with pockets in the skirt (and you know how I adore pockets!).
I am feeling somewhat quiet today; both because I’m missing my mom a bit, and also because it’s Monday. Mondays always catch me a bit off-guard, despite knowing they’re coming. lol. I’ll be back tomorrow with a fun little post, and hopefully later this week some sewing to show! Have a lovely day, friends!

*Is anyone still interested in a tutorial for this belt? Just let me know–I think I actually have all the supplies on hand to whip one up!
