it’s the little things…

Taking a bit of a breather today from the intense-blogging that’s been going on. Just a few snapshots I took last week of a few little things that have found a home with me lately, that I thought you might enjoy seeing! I tend to be a bit conflicted when doing these sorts of posts, because I don’t want to come across as bragging or gloating over things like this. But at the same time, I always love seeing what others find as well. So I guess I’m of two minds about this! So tell me: any little finds recently cross your path that made your day?

01.19.10 | it's the little things...

deadstock barrettes found on the Virginia trip over the holidays. these were found at a weird little store that had a lot of vintage deadstock and was going out of business. I should have snatched up more, but it was towards the beginning of the trip and I didn’t want to go through my spending money at one go!

01.19.10 | it's the little things...

Sailor Husband has been searching Ebay for these vintage Navy sweetheart pins lately. The one on the left (seller dated it to WWI, but I’m not sure…) is a bit worn and shows it’s age, but I tend to like things like that! I’m thinking of making it into a necklace rather than wearing it as a pin.

01.19.10 | it's the little things...

A pretty vintage fabric purse with a Bakelite handle that my parents gave me for Christmas. I’ve used it quite a few times already and love it because it’s light-colored (so many of my handbags are dark leather or fabric)!

01.19.10 | it's the little things...

A 1950s headband hat found in Virginia for a song. Sadly the net veil ripped a bit on the trip back (despite my babying it and packing it oh-so-carefully!), so I need to either tack it up permanently as shown to remove it altogether. I’m getting quite addicted to this style of hat–it tends to work well into my wardrobe.

Thanks for these kinds of post. I love them. Why would that ever be bragging? I love to see all the things you have found and I am glad they went to a good home, one that will treasure them forever! That’s part of the fun with vintage style, finding these rare items and using them. I love the white bow it’s really cute. And being a purse lady, love that one too. ENJOY!

Nathalie January 19, 2011 at 07:32

I absolutely adore those little barrettes! Love the headband hat too! If you’re ever near Charlotte, NC you have to go to Albemarle, NC. There’s an antique store there that looks like nothing, but has some of the greatest finds, for very little $$, because… Well, there are a lot of elderly people in Albemarle, and when they pass, their families usually don’t know what they’ve got so they take it to this store… Sorry about the rambling btw, my pregnant brain just keeps spewing stuff out, lol!!

Seersucker Sally January 19, 2011 at 08:03

What a beautiful little purse! I’m going hunting this weekend for some vintage rayon (for the sew-along, of course!). I’m hoping to have some good luck.

Jenny @ Kerrfect! January 19, 2011 at 08:08

As a navy wife I of course love the sweetheart pins! I actually saw the one with the star banner not to long ago somewhere. I saw a wwii USN sweet heart charm bracelet once on ebay it was awesome. I just have your standard fare from the Nex.

Mia January 19, 2011 at 08:21

The headband hat is amazing and looks great with your hair. I want one too! :) I haven’t been shopping in forever, aside from Christmas and sewing notions!
While it isn’t something to wear it’s one of my favorite things I own my “Fall Buck” http://www.thecherrybox.com/html/plushies.html :)

jadestar January 19, 2011 at 08:21

Definitely not bragging. I love seeing all things people have bought. Its inspiring and fun in its own little way. I especially love the gold bow barette in the first shot.

Marmielu January 19, 2011 at 08:29

Wow! That was a weird little shop, wasn’t it? I like the Navy pins! All this seems like so long ago to me. I’m glad you posted these things.

Please, please, please don’t ever hesitate to show us your vintage finds! For those who buy and/or sell vintage things, blogs are a wonderful source of inspiration and a great research tool.

Love the barrettes – have never seen vintage ones (and on original cards!) before. The old worn Navy sweetheart pin is a lovely find too. Tell your husband he did good!

Megan January 19, 2011 at 08:37

Where in VA did you find those things? I live in Virginia Beach and I’d love to find a place that sold things like this.

janine January 19, 2011 at 08:48

These are so sweet! And I love seeing your finds :) The velvet headpiece is adorable. I see those often at the antique mall and such but have never snagged one, maybe I should? I think the treasure I’m most proud of finding is one of those little secretary pencil pieces— you know how Joan on Mad Men has the pen necklace? Well, this is much like that except it has a pencil lead and the chain is fixed to a pin you’d put on your blouse and its on a spring to let the pencil come out so you can write with it ;) I found this at an estate sale in its original box for a whopping .50! I also found some sweet vintage watches that I want to get fixed up to work as real watches. I love the daintiness of old timey watches :)

Jill January 19, 2011 at 09:19

looooove that bag! wonderful finds in general!!

Leslie January 19, 2011 at 09:29

Oh, the velvet headband looks so pretty on you! It’s perfect. What a fun post! Please keep showing us the pretty things you find. It’s so inspiring.

Re January 19, 2011 at 09:46

Casey, I’ve never thought of it as bragging when you show us your finds. More like sharing the fun, interesting things you find. I love these posts.

The hat is so pretty with your hair.

Love the Navy Pins and the pretty bag. What a great present.

Also want to thank you for inspiring me to start sewing again. I bought fabric for a robe for my granddaughter the other day. We ended up with the wrong sized pattern, though so I have to take it back. But later today am planning to cut it out.

Abigail Buzbee January 19, 2011 at 10:52

Those barrettes are so adorable…the packaging is even cute!
I always love posts like these, they are so inspiring and I have never thought of them as gloating or showing off… just as eye candy! Who doesn’t want to look at gorgeous vintage finds? : )

Catherine January 19, 2011 at 11:02

Oh please don’t ever hold back from sharing your finds with us! I love this kind of post!!! I loved your estate sale finds a little while back. It’s just lovely to be able to admire beautiful things and it’s also just wonderful to know that there are still some beautiful pieces out there at reasonable prices!

Lauren January 19, 2011 at 11:07

Fun finds!! I love the barrettes and their cute packaging. And the purse is so lovely! Love the print!

Kelly January 19, 2011 at 11:18

You are totally not bragging – I love seeing your finds! The headband is beautiful and looks like it’s really versatile.

TrippyTexan January 19, 2011 at 11:20

I love that little barrette with the white bow and tiny bunch of flowers. And the hat! You look wonderful wearing it– I’m so so envious!

ConstantlyAlice January 19, 2011 at 11:38

I love headband hats as well. I seem to have an inordinately large head (I tell my husband it’s indicative of my enormous brain ;) so a lot of vintage hats don’t fit, but I always have success with this style!

Liz January 19, 2011 at 12:08

I love the gold bow barrette. I’m mad about bows. They never go out of style!

I wish I could rock the headband/hat like you do. Looks gorgeous.

Jiji January 19, 2011 at 12:40

It’s not bragging at all, I love seeing other people’s goodies and I like sharing some of my favorites too!

Sherry January 19, 2011 at 13:26

I love to see other peoples purchases – please continue to share! It is wonderful to see these one-of-a-kind items that we would never otherwise see!
I love the hair accessories – so very you! The bag is lovely and unique too.

Nan January 19, 2011 at 13:35

I adore your finds and love seeing them as we have nothing like this up here in Alaska. It seems that when folks moved up here they left behind all their old stuff and when they got here they kept anything and everything that came their way sometimes right out in sight on the property! I love your hair and the look is perfect for you. My pattern came in the mail on Tue by the way. I’m going to start in tacking the pattern tracing.

Kendall January 19, 2011 at 13:58

Headband hats! THAT’s what the’re called!
Love it.
Thanks for sharing your treasures.

Emily January 19, 2011 at 14:09

I love the hat! sadly I don’t really have any vintage things, BUT I did figure out a way to do a different style of faux victory rolls, that look more like the real thing!

Betty Lou January 19, 2011 at 14:27

Great finds. Especially the bag, i’ve got mostly dark colors too.

Tilly January 19, 2011 at 14:53

Oh my! Such lovely things! You aren’t showing off, you are providing us a service of aesthetic pleasure. So cute that your husband is looking for Navy sweetheart pins for you.

Penny Dreadful Vintage January 19, 2011 at 15:01

Silly, it is only bragging if it is, well, bragging. Otherwise it is sharing. Love the barettes, the packaging is the best bit. And the hat too, I think it will look a bit smarter sans-netting anyway x

Alli January 19, 2011 at 15:11

What gorgeous finds Casey! The bows are cute, and I adore the hat. I love the navy pins. I’m really fond of old treasures like that. I’ve got some old buttons off my grandfathers army uniform from WWII and they are really special to me. I love having things from the past- every one has a story of it’s travels ( where it has been and who it has been with). :)

Corinne January 19, 2011 at 15:13

Penny is correct, this is sharing in its purist form. You have such a keen eye for Vintage that to not share it would be unkind, and we know you are so kind. I have several aged pieces, metal of some sort , and plastic, great for a touch of vintage…on a Vintage person:))

Amy Caroline January 19, 2011 at 15:52

Not bragging at all!! I love the hat and the white barrette. So elegant!

Laura S. January 19, 2011 at 16:05

I love the barrettes and the little purse. Thanks for sharing! It’s inspiring to see what treasures other people find.

Erika January 19, 2011 at 17:21

Please never feel bad about showing what you’ve found! I – and obviously a lot of my fellow readers – love to see your finds! It’s inspiring to see what can be found stateside, and it also broadens my horizon for going thrifting.
I loved the white barrette! And the handbag. And the hat is to die for I also love the headband style). =)
As you know, my latest find was the serger for 40 $. Just handed it in for service today and am now keeping my fingers crossed it will work. If it does, it will have made my year =)

lauren January 19, 2011 at 17:28

these kinds of posts are one of my favorites :) i love looking at all the cute stuff that other people find.

melina bee January 19, 2011 at 18:24

those barrettes are the best!

Pia January 19, 2011 at 18:32

Please alwys show! Make me green with envy :-)
It’s amazing what you can find or have on offer in the states. Truly amazing.

It’s all beautiful but I adore the 50s headbands. Just beautiful!

Elissa January 19, 2011 at 18:36

I have to say…I am jealous of your hair! It’s so gorgeous! Mine is too fine to do a lot of vintage hairstyles…and when I pull it back, I look bald. O_o

I wish there was good treasures around here in MD like what you find! All I find is, well, junk. Nothing worth keeping. I’ll just have to keep going back to Ellicott City and keep looking though!

Vicky January 19, 2011 at 18:57

Sometimes the smallest treasures are the most fun. The headband hat is my favorite. Does it fit on like an acutall headband or do you have to pin it down?

On another note I found these cute sailor coasters I thought you might be interested in. http://www.fishseddy.com/browse.cfm/4,3223.html

I love reading you blog. It always brightens my day. Thanks!

Tisha January 19, 2011 at 19:55

Casey, Remember: people who share the same taste(s) never tire of seeing what others have uncovered. I enjoyed the purse photos … quite a unique little bag! The clasp is really neat – sets the purse off. In my sister’s and my recent auction hunting, we have uncovered some wild 60s and 70s vintage fabric ( available at : ebay.com/ user name – writerandhorse) but just today I discovered some lovely teeny printed Japanese/Chinese fabric – letters/stripes/birds perched on branches – and somehow I thought I remembered you like that sort of style, right? (Recalls your wedding photos)… any rate, I don’t have much of the Japanese print, only enough to make small projects or little pillows. (most measurements are 17×10 inches). If anyone is interested, I will be posting it shortly. :)

chie January 19, 2011 at 20:00

i dont think is bragging at all! i love seeing these little cute stuff you got:) i love the bag, what sweet parents you have<3

Elizabeth VP January 19, 2011 at 21:57

I love the barrettes and the headband hat. I’m starting to want headband hats because it’s a way to wear a hat without it being an Official Hat. It doesn’t feel as formal, and works better on my long hair. In fact, your bow headband is how I tried out the look, and I’ve gotten so many compliments, I’m looking for other ways to decorate a headband to get that little-hat effect.

Lmessels January 19, 2011 at 21:58

What lovely finds!! :) Would you be interested in putting together a little list of some vintage shops you like, or how you go about finding worthwhile places. I’ve been to a few vintage stores that are more like an emporium(?) where a bunch of vintage item sellers rent spaces. These aren’t my favorite as items are often locked away (with only one person to assist).

Also, I ADORE that headband/hat. I think it would be a great idea for a tutorial… Just a hint. ;)

Jessica January 20, 2011 at 08:26

Aside from the fact that the hat looks lovely in your hair (of course it does) I actually cant get over how much you look like a natural red hed! It was henna, right? Id nearly try it.. but Im scared ha ha

Victoria / Justice Pirate January 20, 2011 at 11:31

the way your hair is parted in the middle and how the hat sits on your head just looks so pretty and perfect!!! wonderful!!

Kimberly January 20, 2011 at 19:12

Beautiful finds! I love seeing what others were lucky enough to happen upon and do not see it as bragging in the slightest. Certainly vintage but not wardrobe related, I found a sweet red children’s school desk and at another shop a matching (!) chair for my son. Success!

Penicillium January 22, 2011 at 12:02

I love your headband, it fits you very well. It is such an elegant style with the wavy hair.
The bag is very nice too.

Jacquie January 22, 2011 at 15:49

love, love, love your bow barrettes!!! thanks for sharing all your great finds!

the fabled needle (jen) January 23, 2011 at 13:24

that hat style really does suit you!

Siobhan January 28, 2011 at 22:18
