a charming 40s style

There were a few queries, after my post last week, as to how I did the braided “headband”. So the other day while doing my hair I decided to shoot a little video tutorial on how I do this. It’s really simple and doesn’t require a ton of time. Plus it’s great for gals with medium to long hair, and you can curl your hair (as I did in the video) or leave it natural (as I did last week). Either way it’s a charming 40s romantic look that can also translate well as 70s-bohemian. (This would be great for Valentine’s Day too!) Hope you enjoy!

Another great video tutorial – it’s ok about the delay, apology accepted ;) Thanks Casey! BTW – love the new red hue!

Karolina January 12, 2011 at 11:06

Thank you for your videos, Casey ! Thay are all very helpful ; )

Tasha January 12, 2011 at 11:38

Thanks for the fab tutorial Casey! I was initially bummed thinking my hair wouldn’t be quite long enough to try this since the braids wouldn’t wrap around to the base of the other side of my neck (which is how I originally guessed you did this). But once I watched, I saw how you actually hid the ends. I almost always wear some or all of my hair back since I just like the look better on me rather than having my hair down around my face, so I’m always looking for vintage variations on how to do that. I absolutely can’t wait to try this cute style!

Lovely! I’m now wishing I hadn’t cut my hair!

Genevieve Rose January 12, 2011 at 11:47

By the way, Casey, it’s good to have you back–I missed you! I didn’t think I would ever miss someone from a blog (if you’ll pardon my candidness) but I did indeed miss you! :D

Your videos are the best Casey, I’ll definitely try this out, sometimes it’s hard to think of different things to do with my hair everyday so I mostly leave it down and natural but I love trying things I watch on tutorials because they’re so easy to follow along with!
Looking forward to the next one!

Gorgeous! I’m definitely going to try this one out. My little 2 year old boy sat on my knee through the whole tutorial saying ‘ pretty’ and ‘pretty lady’ – he watched the whole thing transfixed!! Thanks Casey

Mia January 12, 2011 at 12:26

Great tutorial! I always wondered how women accomplished this style, it never occurred to me you could hid the braid ends! LOL! My hair might not be long enough yet (it takes FOREVER to grow) but I’m going to try it anyway.

Katie January 12, 2011 at 12:38

I love this! I’ve been really into braids lately, and I love the idea of combining them with a 40′s roll style. Thanks for the inspiration!

nichole January 12, 2011 at 12:40

I love these tutorials! They have helped me keep to growing out my hair:)

Michelle January 12, 2011 at 12:42

Such a great tutorial! I watched the whole thing and wish I had long enough hair to do this successfully – my hair is so fine, I envy your thick locks!

Kitty January 12, 2011 at 12:44

I absolutely love your hair tutorials, you’re the reason I started trying to do my hair! I can’t even properly put my hair in pig tails, but I’m starting to get better and better thanks to you :)

Portia January 12, 2011 at 12:46

Fab! By the time summer comes my hair should be long enough to give it a go.
Love the fake victory rolls. All of the effect without being over the top.

Thanks! You look fantastic!

Jill/laughbutnotloudly January 12, 2011 at 14:29

I’ve tried to do this so many times. Turns out I was making it much more complicated than it actually is! Can’t wait to try your technique.

By the way, LOVE the red hair.

Sherry January 12, 2011 at 14:33

Thanks for the inspiration Casey – I’m trying to think of new things to do with my very straight hair! Now I have my Mum sending me her heated rollers that she never used!!

Aimee January 12, 2011 at 15:11

so pretty! I’m kind of nervous of “pretty” looks as my look is more fetale, but you have inspired me to try! I’ll probably try a side parting as middle partings don’t suit me, thanks for posting! x

Laura January 12, 2011 at 15:12

Thank you for the the tutorial, I love braids! :) Anyway, I don’t have much hair and they are very thin and lively. Therefore, I can’t hide the pins in my hair and also, they don’t hold my hair well. Any tips?

Erika January 12, 2011 at 15:14

Great tutorial! Thank you so much, I will try this when it gets warmer. A good hairdo for swing dancing, maybe? =) BTW, how is it going with your dancing? Are you secretley swingin’ away now and then or wasn’t there enough time and/or interest? Sorry, just being nosy and curious ;)
Cheers!

Ruth January 12, 2011 at 17:29

Cute hairstyle! effortless and so elegant, love it!! Thank you Casey, for another fabulous tutorial :)

Arya January 12, 2011 at 18:49

Thanks for this video, Casey! I like Heidi Braids, but have had trouble figuring out what to do with the ends so that it all looks neat. Now, I know how to fix that AND do this lovely half-up-half-down version. Yay!

Elizabeth VP January 12, 2011 at 20:32

I really like this style, and how it has (as someone else mentioned) a 40′s look without being “too much.” The rolled section would also be a great way to hide bangs that are growing out. I’ll try it as a change from headbands (quick hop back to the 40s from the 60s).
Thanks for posting it, and that red looks so natural!

Tessa January 12, 2011 at 21:50

This is great – thank you! I have long hair, and I do a lot of swing dancing, so I’m always looking for vintage styles that a) I can do in a few minutes, between rushing from work and getting ready to go out, b) that are good for long hair that isn’t cut into a vintage style, and c) that I can sweat into! I’m going to try this out for my next social dance.

Awesome tutorial (as always ;) ) Casey. I’m definitely going to give this one a try. It looks so cute. You make it look so easy, so fingers crossed mine turns out as perfect as yours does!

Alli January 12, 2011 at 22:09

Oh, and I forgot to say thanks so much for posting it up as I was really curious as to how you did it. You must have read my mind! ;)

Great video!!! I really like you style…
Ah, Happy New Year!

Elise January 13, 2011 at 09:29

Great tutorial, just wish my hair was a bit longer so I could try the plaits! Been watching some of your other videos, love how easy they are to follow :)

Jenny-Rose January 13, 2011 at 09:44

I tried this and it was cute and easy – thanks! For those of us with finer/not as dense hair (as I know you have you lucky girl!), you’ll need a slightly larger section of hair than 1×1. No biggie since the “down” hair covers it up nicely. Also mini booby pins worked better to secure the braids. (they are shorter and tighter than regular bobby pins – I found mine at Target)

Emma January 13, 2011 at 14:51

I just love your new haircolour! :)
More tutorials, I get so much inspiration.

Take care <3

Lindsey January 13, 2011 at 15:56

Love this! After three attempts I finally got a decent braided head band. My problem is hiding Bobby pins. You make it look so easy. I alway use your basic 40′s Style from your earlier video. People love it.

Hope you keep the videos coming. Maybe some updos?!?!

Minnietheminks January 13, 2011 at 17:32

Very cute hairstyle! Thanks for the tutorial, I enjoyed it very much. Mine turned out pretty as I followed along. =)

Tasia January 14, 2011 at 17:30

Very pretty, thanks for sharing! Now if only my hair would grow faster I could try it out. I love that it’s vintage without being too over the top!

Fabienne January 18, 2011 at 14:52
