chilly weather inspiration

Hello everyone! How was your weekend? It’s good to be back in the blogging world–I missed you all and writing posts quite a bit! I didn’t get as many projects done as I had hoped (mostly due to my slightly unrealistic expectations about how much I can accomplish in a 24 hour period!), but I did end up having some time to just refocus on the why of my creative processes. It was wonderfully refreshing to be able to gain a bit of perspective about why I had been feeling a bit apathetic in the creative/projects department lately. I also was able to get some planning done on my fall sewing list! But more about that a bit later… I’m just excited to returning to blogging this week–I have a bunch of new ideas for posts and such. Thank you all so much for your lovely comments and emails throughout the week–knowing that I was missed was rather sweet!

So for this week’s scans, I have a smattering of coats from 1944. I know–it’s far too warm and early to even really start thinking about such things, but I decided to participate in Gertie’s Lady Grey Jacket sew along, and have been scoping out ideas for my version of the Lady Grey pattern. So of course I flipped open the Sears catalog to take a peek for inspiration! I think what I love most are some of the lovely colors that coats were available in–the light blue is especially catching my eye! Hope you enjoy looking through these as much as I did!

I love these topper style jackets.

Check out some of the details on these, like trapunto quilting.

Some lovely inspiration, there. Glad to see you’re back! Sounds like you got more done than you think – good for you! :)
Have fun with your sew-along – I shall be vacationing from Sept 1st to Sept 17th in your end of the country. Disney World, here I come! :D I’ll still be lurking on various sites, though (especially yours, you fabulous girl, you). Good luck with the sew-along!

Yea, you are back. Hope you had a good break. You know there is only so much sewing you can do so don’t feel bad.

I love the coats, esp the first red one and the “toppers”. I hate to wear coats (and our winters are so mild mine mostly just stays in the car for emergencies)

Love them all but my favorite is the blue “wrap-tie.” I could definitely see you looking your most Gene Tierney=esque in that!

All of those coats are so classic and feminine! I love them! I have a dark grey pea coat for dressy occasions and a brown topper style for every day. They’re the only coats I like to wear : )

Lovely to have you back Casey :-)

Great Inspiration, I will be participating in the sew along also, have already made The Lady Grey but I can never get enough of a good thing lol.

Genevieve Deriaux says in her book ” A Guide to Elegance” that coats are always best in a bright colour and I tend to agree, I cant wait to see what you come up with :-)

Hi Casey,
Thank goodness you’re back – I’ve really missed your blog this last week. The coats are lovely and the blue one really does look very similar to the Lady Grey pattern. I agree with Nicole (and of course Genevieve Deriaux) re: the fact that coats should be bright. I think they should cheer you up on a cloudy, cold day. In the UK we spend so much time in our coats, I think it’s worth having the best. I don’t think my sewing skills are quite up to the Lady Grey pattern yet but I will be watching the sew along with great interest. I love the blue colour and I think it would suit your complexion really well.
Anyway, have not commented before – just lurked but wanted you to know that you were missed and am so pleased to have you back.

1944 was a very good year for coat fashion! The blue wrap-tie coat is my favorite. Also love all the twin-button coats – and anything with trapunto quilting.

I’m a non-sewer, so it’s probably not surprising that I had never heard of trapunto until I started looking through 40′s catalogs. Have you ever attempted this? It looks v. difficult!

Oooh, arent all these coats just dreamy? Now we need cool crisp weather! Fall can’t come soon enough for me. And oh, I love the hats too! Too darling…
