Just to demonstrate my utter lack of ability to keep my mind on one style lately, I took a decided Edwardian turn Sunday, after wearing my 1940s sailor playsuit the previous day. Despite not owning a gorgeous Edwardian summer dress, I do have a couple pieces of Edwardian undergarments. Put them together, and something close enough to the romantic, summery look that I’m coveting appears!

  • blouse: antique corset cover
  • skirt: antique petticoat
  • shoes: asos
  • belt: thrifted
  • necklace: gift from my mom
  • earrings: anthropologie
  • parasol: epcot at disney world

As usual, too many pictures of this outfit here. Sailor Husband took these for me in a little spot I found was perfect for photographing outfits. Problem is, it’s right along a rather heavily traveled thoroughfare, and neighbors find me quite entertaining. During this particular shoot, one lady even stopped and came over to give me pointers on how I should pose and telling me to “smile”! It was all in good fun, of course, and I wasn’t the least offended–just utterly amused. Alas, dressing theatrically and taking outfit pictures isn’t always comfortable for my somewhat shy nature. lol.

You look gorgeous! Makes me want to wear some of my antique undies as outwear too.

BTW – do you still have your 1910′s fashion plates online somewhere? I went looking for them recently and was so sad to find them gone.

Christie June 1, 2010 at 06:23

You take such gorgeous photo my dear! Your so photogenic! x

Mary Lou June 1, 2010 at 06:24

These are incredible! You look beautiful! The hubby takes the most wonderful shots of you, and I think you pose the best for him. It makes my heart feel good.
Love,
Mom

Gorgeous outfit – I love the Edwardian period, so romantic. To think those gorgeous things would have been hidden from view! They’re lovely pictures too. I particularly like the second one – such a lovely smile.

Quincy June 1, 2010 at 06:39

Casey, these are amazing! You look stunning! I love the story about the lady passing by, hehe.
Oh, and how did I miss your post of you wearing the sailor playsuit!? It’s amazing! :D

Mona June 1, 2010 at 06:49

Probably my favourite look until now, Casey ! Really, really awesome, it fits you perfectly and it’s beautiful. Congratulations !! :-)

Jill June 1, 2010 at 07:00

just gorgeous!! Coincidentally, I just acquired an Edwardian dress. I plan to wear it to a very special location that was used in the Anne of Green Gables movie series, then it’s going up in my shop. I LOVE how you’ve used your Edwardian underlayers so beautifully here!

lizzy June 1, 2010 at 07:04

dear casey,

you are stunning.
the white against the green & browns in nature.
your elegance which is so instinctive, that i barely notice any shyness.
these photos drenched in femininity & a poise of bygone eras make me breathe more deeply. and also make me want to come over for a summer tea and meet you & raid your closets & have another photoshoot.

love, lizzy

you look spot on. great job in putting this look together and showing us the inspiration behind it. note to self: procure a darling parasol.

Izzy June 1, 2010 at 07:37

I really like that chemise you are wearing, ive never seen a real one, I went to this corset convention last Fall with my design school and they talked about this type of undergarment. So great to see them worn as everyday wear! You really pull it offf so well :)

I feel you on the being shy with people checking you out while taking pics. I was in a puplic park taking some with my boyfriend and a pack of young boys started to whislt at me, I was annoid.

Have a wonderful day doll!

:)

You’re a vision! I’ve been trying to find a white maxi dress, but these photos make me realize separates are a better bet.

Anna June 1, 2010 at 08:34

Wow!! Just the perfect outfit for the SUMMER ^-^!!

P.S Were you the costumier for the Painted Veil -movie?! Why do I even ask! Of course!! (lol)

Victoria / Justice Pirate June 1, 2010 at 08:58

LOVE the looks. I too adore edwardian, georgian, and Victorian styles so much. Renaissance as well. They are just so romantic and gorgeous looking!! great job.

Shona June 1, 2010 at 09:13

Casey you look stunning! Thank you for the inspiration. I have my grandmothers nightgown that I could belt and wear like this occasionally. Love the brown with it and the shoes are FAB

Hana June 1, 2010 at 09:21

these photos are just absolutely gorgeous! i love the outfit, every piece of it! thanks for posting the pictures! =)

Amy June 1, 2010 at 09:23

The Woman in White is actually my favorite Wilkie Collins book! I love the look! I love long skirts but I have a hard time trying to figure out what to wear on top and then what shoes to wear so I don’t really wear them that often but I am working on it. This post will definitely go into my style file!

Erin June 1, 2010 at 09:48

~Oh, what a lovely dress!!! I really like that umbrella,as well! I have always liked those kinds of umprellas. You know, the kind that look rather oriental and are absolutely useless when it actually rains, but look like something straight from Anne of Green Gables, or Little Women~

Zeila June 1, 2010 at 09:57

Too many? Oh no, you look beautiful!

Gabreial June 1, 2010 at 10:38

I love, love, love that outfit!

Clare June 1, 2010 at 10:57

Perfectly elegant, Casey! You look stunning.

Rebecca June 1, 2010 at 11:06

This look suits you so much. White is actually a flattering colour on us fair skinned girls! You’ve inspired me to wear more white. The photos are beautiful.

Lauren June 1, 2010 at 11:09

Oh my gosh, LOVE! So wonderfully romantic. Love how you’ve paired it with a big belt- so very wearable.
I swear, if we ever get together we’ll be trouble. I’ve been drafting out an Edwardian dress and watching period movies for days. How did you know?! hehehe.

calivintage June 1, 2010 at 11:15

i know i should be commenting on the whole outfit, but those shoes caught me eye! they’re perfect!!! just beautiful!

Briana June 1, 2010 at 12:12

Splendid! Absolutely splendid! I think its swell that Sailor Husband is your photographer, and he does a wonderful job! As you have been told countless times, you are gorgeous!

Once again, I must know how you did your hair! I absolutely ADORE your hairstyles in ALL of your posts, especially this one!

Thank you so much for the pictures, and I hope to see more soon!
Love your fabulously delightful blog!

eli June 1, 2010 at 12:24

Oh my you look absolutely beautiful here!

Tasia June 1, 2010 at 12:27

You look gorgeous and have captured the look of soft summer whites beautifully! That’s how I hope to look in white dresses, casually elegant.
And I also feel shy when I get caught posing for my own photos…at least you have a photographer, it’s even more awkward using a self timer :)

Zohar June 1, 2010 at 12:44

Oh dear that look gorgeous :) I love the way your styled your hair in such a romantic style. Wonderfully done!

Bella Di Nonna June 1, 2010 at 13:16

Oh Casey, you look absolutely lovely! I haven’t been commenting much recently but I do love reading all your posts – this one, though, stopped in my tracks.

Such a beautiful outfit, and beautiful photos!

Becca June 1, 2010 at 14:00

Wow – this outfit is elegant and lovely! You look stunning!

Anna Allen June 1, 2010 at 14:28

so pretty casey!! you make a lovely edwardian girl. :) and i completely relate with taking pictures around other people. i try to avoid others when i have my picture taken! i feel really awkward. that’s funny about the lady telling you to smile, though. hehe

~Sherry~ June 1, 2010 at 14:29

Isn’t it amazing that this was once considered underwear, yet is totally wearable outerwear today?
I love how you’ve modernised it with the belt – it looks like a gorgeous outfit for summer days in the park – so romantic!

Lauren June 1, 2010 at 14:39

You look oh so beautiful and romantic!
Usually, I forget about Edwardian clothes for vintage inspiration, however, you have made me realize I actually do like the Edwardian Era ( although nothing can replace my 1940′s obsession!).

This is probably one of my favorite looks ever from you: simply stunning!

Karen June 1, 2010 at 15:55

What’s so great about living in the year 2010 is that we can jump from era to era in what we wear depending on our mood for the day! I admire your self possession in that you can dress the way you do and not worry about what people think. Lovely outfit, but all of yours are!

nicole June 1, 2010 at 16:56

What lovely pictures casey! I really love the parasol! your evoking images of Jane Austen heroines!! such a prett spot was worthwhile braving the neighbours for your pics!
:-) Ruby Slippers

Diana June 1, 2010 at 18:37

oh my god that’s gorgeous! i would buy that in a second! it’s perfect because it doesn’t look too old fashioned, like you could wear it everyday.
and the shoes i loooooooooove!!!!

Sydney June 1, 2010 at 21:20

You look gorgeous Casey! I love the soft, clean, fresh look of a white summer wardrobe, so romantic and charming….

XOXO~Syd

Renee June 2, 2010 at 01:49

What a lovely outfit. Looks great on you. The pictures are very good. I think you both did a great job, you modeling and sailor hubby’s photography.

Your pictures always look so nice.

I think that is so sweet the lady stopped to give you pointers. You know age has its privleges:)

Tilly June 2, 2010 at 02:02

Lovely to see a way to wear Edwardian style without looking like you’re in fancy dress. I’m reading A.S.Byatt’s The Children’s Book at the moment which is set in the late Victorian to Edwardian period and has tons of descriptions of what the ladies are wearing – really interesting.

Andi B. Goode June 2, 2010 at 03:26

Casey, you look breathtakingly amazing!!!
-Andi x

Karin van D. June 2, 2010 at 05:54

You look beautiful. And I so know how you feel during photoshoots, I have the same feeling of shyness, especially when all kins of people start to watch me while I try to pose as naturally as possible. Right :-)

Gorgeous pictures though. As always.

Lottie June 2, 2010 at 05:58

You look beautiful. The Edwardian look suits you every bit as much as the 1940′s.

Isn’t it fab having a husband who takes good pictures? :-) x

You look so lovely with the long dress/skirt length! Ha ha, I love that you keep switching up favorite decade inspirations too . . . . I was always looking for an Edwardian dress and pretty much gave up on it, but this outfit is making me want to do something with an old Edwardian nightgown I got from Drew’s mom.

Your hair is just gorgeous, too!

Mugsy June 2, 2010 at 11:41

Gawidgus, dahlink! ;) Your Hubby takes the greatest pics of you – of course, he has a fabu subject to work with! I’m in love with your hair!!!

Eunice June 2, 2010 at 12:05

Lovely outfit like always! I understand about people looking when you are taking pictures. I went to Balboa Park yesterday to have some portraits done. and that is what happen to me. It’s a little embarrasing but fun lol!

the fabled needle (jen) June 2, 2010 at 15:46

this style suits you just as much as the ’30s/’40s! i know what you mean though, i’m always going back and forth with styles; not just in clothes, but everything it seems.

you are inspiring me to take better outfit shots. being shy as well, it’s the part of blogging i feel the least comfortable with. maybe i can loop in my husband to help me out. :)

seabreeze June 2, 2010 at 21:45

It looks very bohemian…cute, even if it is underwear! (Wonder what Edwardians would think if they say you walking about like that!)

I do like the romanticism and true classy elegance of edwardian wear, like in movies like Finding Neverland, Anne of Green Gables (all three parts), Pollyanna….

if only ladies were still careful about their appearance…wouldn’t it be great to see the reemergence of soft feminine looks? hats and gloves and parasols and skirts?! ::sigh::

WendyB June 3, 2010 at 18:21

Beautiful outfit and photos.
