[ lovely hat by Brenda! ]

A few months ago Brenda, who runs Humble Bumble B and make adorably retro-styled hats, contacted me about modeling a hat for her. Of course I jumped at the chance (what girl wouldn’t?!), and she made me a custom hat to photograph, based on a vintage stewardess cap I sent her pictures of (hence the title of this post). Is this hat not the most adorable thing ever?! I love it!!!

Sailor Husband graciously offered to take pictures of me–because I’m utter rubbish when doing self portraits that I need to turn out really well (it doesn’t help I don’t have a remote for my camera yet… need to get one!). I have to admit I’m pretty proud of these shots he took; he did a lot of photography in high school, but hasn’t done much since he enlisted. I think he needs to keep at it, don’t you? If nothing else, I need to make him my Official Photographer. hehe!

Thank you Brenda for this lovely hat and opportunity to do a little modeling! (If you want to see more shots, I put a ridiculous amount up on Flickr… Yikes! I feel slightly silly–I don’t want to seem narcissistic! lol.)

p.s. Thank you all for your lovely comments last week! Especially the gardening advice… I am printing out a lot of the tips and book suggestions to get myself started with this!

Well, photographers need good subjects and your husband is lucky in that department. Went to your flickr page – love the salute photo! And the one of you kinda glaring at the camera…lol…I mean that in a good way – it seems saucy.

oh how glamourous, beautiful lady!!! I love the hat and the shots. your sailor husband takes good photos.

Your hat is adorable. Great modeling job.

Your husband did a great job with the photography.

I think you always look so cute in the clothes you make, etc.

Maybe more designers will get the hint from all the people who love vintage clothing and design things with more of a retro look.

meant to comment on your neat sewing area. I have a craft room that is neat for about 10 minutes.

LOVE it!!

That hat is adorable and your pics are great! I am a little jealous that I am not a “hat person”, but it goes so well with your look!

@Renee: I was shocked when I picked up JC Penney’s latest Little Red Book. It starts out with some 60′s mod looks (reminded me a little of the stewardess look.) Has a couple 50′s-ish floral print dresses (above the knee, though.) Really that’s where it stops, but I was surprised and happy to see that they were taking inspiration from some style decades that I love, instead of being filled with 80′s monstrosities. Seriously, if your demographic used to wear that crap when they were kids, chances are they don’t want to revisit that horror.

The hat is gorgeous, and so are you in these photos :) You’re right – your husband is a great photographer. The lighting is just perfect in these photos – fresh and pretty.

Adorable photos! You look amazing, that hat and the whole look totally suits you.
I am considering getting a remote for my camera too! I’m also having a hard time getting good self-pictures and can only get my guy to help so often. If you get one, let us know how it works out for you ;)

Your husband should take more photos! These are so so lovely, and, yes, once again I’ll say that you should go into vintage modeling full-time!

Melissa Collins May 4, 2010 at 00:10

Absolutely gorgeous! I want one of those hats now. I guess you were therefore successful in your modeling job!

Amy May 4, 2010 at 00:27

Fabulous! I meant to ask you a few days ago- you mentioned that you sew facings into most of your clothing. Do you use a particular type of interfacing, or do you just use the fashion fabric? I’ve used facings a few times according to pattern instructions (using fusible interfacing) and the result is always too stiff, too “homemade” looking for me.
