[ mostly organized! ]
Organizing my sewing supplies has been on my to-do list for quite some time, but one of those things that has been hard to do. First, from lack of space when I was living with my parents (everything was divided between my bedroom and the basement!). Currently it was because most of the fabric, notions and such were still in the big, plastic bins I moved with, and in our already overcrowded second bedroom closet (aka the “storage unit”). Which meant every time I wanted something I had to dig. This in turn resulted in my being monumentally lazy about having to dig to put stuff back, so by the end of my most recent sewing binge, the room was pretty much ready to be declared an Official Sewing Disaster Area (OSDA).
[ stacked fabrics and shoe boxes of notions and trims. ]
[ vintage machine attachments and favorite magazines. ]
[ inspiration line above the shelving. I change this from time-to-time. ]
Finally frustrated with the chaos and inability to easily access my supplies (which would make my sewing time more efficient–at least in theory), I decided to buy a couple of inexpensive shelving units from Ikea and get to work streamlining things. Most of the patterns, fabric and notions are now easily accessible across the room–I no longer have to go digging so much! (Although, to be honest, there still is a few boxes in the closet: scraps, heavy fabrics, modern patterns, etc.) It’s still not perfect: I need a few more boxes for some of the smaller notions/trims and a new organizer for my buttons; but it’s pretty darn close to perfect for me!
[ paper and fabric flowers I made for decorating the walls. ]
It’s nice to look at too–just seeing the fabric out inspires me to get started on some new projects! Plus, every time I walk in the room I get a smile on my face… Thanks to Sailor Husband’s ever amusing sense of humor. Notice the GI Joe doll on the top shelf? After I put my 50th Anniversary Barbie up there (along with the creepy foam head I use to hold and display hats), he thought it would be hilarious to put Joe up there too. lol. That guy cracks me up!
I’ll eventually do a post to show you where my sewing machine and serger reside, but that area is still getting the kinks worked out as far as neatness and organization go…

I love my sewing room when it’s tidy, but the minute I start working on my next project it looks like a tornado went through. Pulling out fabric boxes, zipper boxes, etc…
I love your photo banner! Very cute.
Blessings
Linda
It’s so wonderfully organised and easy to see where everything is. The fabric looks so pretty on the shelf. I’m familiar with the ‘digging’ situation. I’m in desperate need of a work space for all my bits and pieces. Thanks for inspiring me to get my act together!
very nice, Casey…I feel inspired to pull together my sewing room – all my stuff is currently in boxes in the closet.
Oh, my goodness, you’re so neat and tidy! I aspire to be that organized, but I have WAY too much stuff and way too little time! My sewing space is the polar opposite of yours, I’m afraid. Sigh.
Lovely! Maybe this will inspire me to get my butt in gear and organize my own crafty space!
Love the flowers on the wall.
Ohh, and I forgot to comment the other day, but I’m SO jealous of your new knitting endeavors!
So pretty.
Very nice! I love the little clothesline of inspiration pics and might be stealing that idea. I’ve been wanting to put up a bulletin board of inspiration photos, but don’t have the wall space anywhere that I can actually reach. The clothesline could be a great solution.
These are all so lovely. I love the pattern choices especially. Great job on organizing it all up so much. I need to find this Lula magazine everyone speaks of. I went to their site a couple weeks ago and they haven’t let me know where they are located so I can buy one. ugh.
Love it — I love, love, love seeing pictures of peoples’ “crafting” spaces! : )
They usually put mine to shame, but I like having the inspiration!
It looks lovely! And I love that you have a dress form – I’m jealous!
I recently did the same and discovered I own way more fabric and patterns than I originally thought – a veritable stash in fact! I love the way you’ve pegged up those photos.
It looks so tidy and inspiring – a clear space = a clear head – as they say!
I don’t like working in a mess, and when I do it feels like things just take longer!
Hurray for you!!! It looks so nice, and that fabric is so cherry sitting on those shelves. I love GI Joe!!! And he brought his log, too. This reminds me of someone who has Jabba the Hut, etc. in his professional study!
Love,
Mom
G.I. Joe is definitely a nice companion to Barbie. Well done, Sailor Man.
Question. I was fiddling around with some leather scraps and thought of making a brooch just like your “wall-flowers.” Did you use a template or cut them out freehand?
Girl, my fabric stash would eat yours for a snack. hahaha!! Yours is so neat and tidy, but I still have to dig because of the bins under the bed, in the closet, behind that table there….
Have you used that buttonholer attachment?? I’ve got a Bernina and a Viking, but I’ve seen those at flea markets. I just don’t know if they would work on my machine? Or if it would be worth trying. I’ve read in other places they make amazing buttonholes though!
Very tidy and oh so cozy!
You did a lovely job! And just look at all those beautiful fabrics waiting to be stitched up and created with! Splendid, indeed!
Happy weekend to You Casey!! ♥
that is awesome! I wish I had the space to do that. You did a terrific job
Hello there!
I’ve been following your blog for quite some time now and I just wanted to let you know that I just nominated your blog for a Norwegian Goddess Award. The Norwegian online magazine Gudinne.no (Goddess) sporadically hands out their Goddess award to web pages, blogs etc that are positive and inspirational. Since you’ve inspired me as much as you have through all of your creative work, I thought you deserved a nomination.
I hope you win!
Cheers, Therese
Wow! Looks so lovely and clean-I wish all my sewing stuff looked as organised. I am afraid it is a matter of diving in with my bits and bobs. Even my bedroom is not as organised! I love the material you have-so bright and cheery. If only I could grab it through the screen, until then I can only drool
I have been watching your blog for some time-even before I started blog hopping. Your videos on 40s-50s hair and makeup tutorials on youtube are amazing! So inspirational. I love having a go and now my friends compliment me on how I look very 40s! Huzzah!
Best compliment in the world! A pat on the back for being a sewing goddess inspiring us all!
That’s a great setup you have, and it doesn’t take up too much room. Hubsey and I are moving into the city and we’ll probably have to give up a couple hundred square feet of living space (and we’re only at 890 right now, so it’ll be tight). I’ll need a better storage situation for all my jewelry stuff. Sigh.
Your space looks like a nice place to create! I can see some lovely fabrics!
I have a book called “Weekend Sewing” or something. Some small projects that are cute & quick. The front of the book, though, has some VERY great storage solution ideas…If you’re interested I can make sure I have the title correctly & give you the authors name. I am actually searching for some items for my area to make it a little more project-friendly.
HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!
I’m going to try to call you today, but figured I should write it on here in case I don’t get a free minute…
