little bow blue

Sewing Evidence! This skirt is one of the projects I made while we were in Augusta. I’m sure anyone in the rooms around us wondered what the heck was going on with all the whirring machine noises (I also lugged along my serger. Yes, I am crazy!). lol. This skirt was partly inspired by a fantastic high waist skirt pattern I snagged when Mom and I were thrifting earlier this month, and by Gertie’s stylish bow skirt. I have long been contemplating the merit of bows on skirts (I’ve had this image–from Ebay–in my inspiration file for years), and Gertie’s creation and the arrival of this pattern just cinched it for me. I ended up only using the pattern for the basic skirt pieces, and free-forming my own bow, but it turned out pretty darn cute!

[ more photos here. ]

  • blouse: antique nightgown, shortened (the bottom edge was damaged)
  • skirt: made by me
  • locket necklace: by the lovely and talented Sarah
  • earrings: Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • shoes: vintage “Town and Country”, thrifted (look familiar?)

I used a steel blue cotton twill for the outer fabric, and then lined it (using this method) with a rayon lining (my favorite). I really love the super curvy fit (although it’s still a bit big over the hips for me; I have really weirdly shaped hips!), the high waist that cinches, and the way it moves when I walk. hehe! Although it’s definitely a bombshell skirt screaming to be styled in a vintage-inspired-pin-up way, I’ve been in an ultra romantic mood lately, and opted to do a variation with some Edwardian inspired pieces. Plus, my hair wasn’t cooperating on Monday (when I took these photos), and piling it up on my head a la Gibson Girl fashion was literally the only thing it’d do. lol.

More sewing projects to come over the next week or so… I actually have a backlog of completed dresses to share with y’all! Highly unusual for me… haha! Hope you all are having a lovely Wednesday!

I love the skirt…and ADORE that you made that blouse out of an antique nightgown. Brilliant idea!!!

ann March 31, 2010 at 07:23

I LOVE the blouse! What a great idea; now I’m on the hunt for antique nightgowns. The skirt is lovely too.

The Cupcake Goddess March 31, 2010 at 07:35

It’s gorgeous and looks so chic. You look unbelievably elegant in that get up. I adore it and your hair, I have no idea what you are talking about. It’s GORGEOUS! So so stunning! Love it!

Oh so cute and I love the color!

Erika March 31, 2010 at 08:00

The skirt with that blouse is just adorable! I’m sure it’d look very pin-up-ish with some other styling, but I really like this look on you.
I’ve been a bit under the weather lately, so a bit late: thanks for the great post on patterns and sewing! Your posts on starting sewing always gives me something new to think about.
Also; lovely outfit for traveling, it looks so comfortable yet stylish!

Happy Easter! =)

Alyce March 31, 2010 at 08:16

hahaaha – I can’t believe you took your Serger!! That’s just genius!
The skirt is lovely!

Gertie March 31, 2010 at 09:20

So cute! I think we all need more skirts with bows on them! Also, I can’t believe you brought both your serger and sewing machine along on your trip. That is dedication. :)

Kelly March 31, 2010 at 09:21

you’re so lovely/adorable/elegant! i absolutely adore that skirt!

reilly March 31, 2010 at 10:36

Cute!! I love it. I have a skirt pattern that looks like your pink inspiration skirt – seeing what it could look like all made up makes me want to get right to it!

Jealous of your little trip to Georgia, even though you couldn’t see much – next month I’m going on a little road trip with my dad to KS, OK, Austin, TX and hopefully Graceland (haha).

Angela March 31, 2010 at 11:26

What a cute outfit! I want to add mows to my skirts now! :)

Angela March 31, 2010 at 12:00

Oops… I mean bows not mows. :)

Marjorie March 31, 2010 at 12:23

Oh!! Casey! It’s stunning! I love the wee bow detail!! And your blouse! What a lovely idea to hem an old shift! I adore this outfit! Happy Springtime to You!! :)

Jesslyn March 31, 2010 at 13:32

LOVE IT!! Especially the bow in front.

Uta March 31, 2010 at 13:48

Adorable! All I ever do is put my hair up, as I have absolutely no patience for styling it.

Pamela March 31, 2010 at 13:55

What a clever use of a night gown! My first thought when I saw the picture was “I want that blouse” and then “I need to sew more skirts”. I love the whole look!

Bridget March 31, 2010 at 14:20

Officially way too cute! Love the length…

~buzzybee~ March 31, 2010 at 16:38

Absolutely love it!
I’m making a high waisted skirt at the moment, and just might have to make another one now!!

sarahblank March 31, 2010 at 17:30

What a pretty outfit!!! And I see my lil’ locket there too, it wis such a joy to see you wearing it in this post! Beautiful Casey!

Piroska March 31, 2010 at 17:45

Great job on the skirt, it looks so professional. I love bows on skirts and high waisted pencil skirts are a favourite of mine. Lovely!

Sam March 31, 2010 at 18:08

Honestly, Casey, I think that’s the cutest thing you’ve ever made. And that’s saying a lot. I am absolutely in love with everything about that skirt- the bow, the color, the high waist, the weight of the fabric… it’s perfect.

Tasia April 1, 2010 at 00:18

LOVE it!!! The bow is super adorable. Again, I’m inspired and impressed by the cute things you keep turning out!

Vintage Vivant April 1, 2010 at 00:26

I LOVE LITTLE BOWS! It turned out darling!

Zoe April 1, 2010 at 02:31

Wow, this skirt is awesome! I loved Gertie’s bow skirt and I LOVE this one. Plus you’ve made it in my favourite colour so that’s always going to be a thumbs up for me! Also, thanks for including that link to quick lining. I’m about to make my friend a skirt and thought it would be a good opportunity to try a different technique of lining than I usually use to try and expand my sewing repertoire. All the best Casey x

Kate in Belgrade April 1, 2010 at 03:37

Skirt and styling are great! I wouldn’t have thought to wear it like that, so this gives me inspiration to take another look at how I wear skirts of that shape.

Rhiannon April 1, 2010 at 11:27

Aww, the skirt and the whole outfit is perfect! (those shoes!) I love that you took your sewing machine to a hotel. :)

Really, that skirt’s amazing, and I love that you made something so modern ’40s looking out of an old ’80s pattern! The bow just makes it that much better too.

Victoria / Justice Pirate April 1, 2010 at 13:31

I’m with everyone in saying this whole outfit is well put together! I love it very much!! Great job.

B.K. April 3, 2010 at 10:38

The instant I saw the first photo, I was like “LOVE THAT!!!” The blouse/antique nightgown is delightful! And I guess it’s rather unanimous, the skirt is amazing!

lindsey April 4, 2010 at 23:39

I LOVE the whole outfit!!!! The top is amazing and the skirt is one of my favorite cuts.

angie.a April 5, 2010 at 18:17

GORGEOUS as usual. :) I’ve got a bow skirt or two up my sleeves too, thanks for pointing out Gertie’s! I had actually forgotten that one! And I love Emma Pillsbury’s wardrobe. You can never have too much inspiration, right??

Felicia April 5, 2010 at 23:44

A nightgown as a blouse eh? hmmm I should try that

sewiknittoo April 11, 2010 at 21:52
