I have thick hair too. When I do pin-curls I usually let it dry quite a lot, maybe even use the hairdryer a little, and then I curl it (using mostly stand up curls) put on a head scarf and sleep on it. I have never tried setting lotion, and I don't seem to need any either. However, I do need to put the curls back up every night if I want them to last. But I just do about 7 big random curls...My hair is about 8" at it's longest point, and cut pretty much like a middy. Good luck experimenting! :) Very Cute! I have thick hair too.
