little accents + giveaway

02.15.10 {cherry brooch}

[ scroll down for a tutorial and giveaway! ]

I love figuring out little accent pieces to add to otherwise plain outfits. Saturday I was wearing my favorite gray wool skirt and a light blue cardigan (it was cold here!), but decided it looked rather plain. None of my brooches in my jewelry stash seemed to work, so I put together a little “quick fix” piece! A trio of “cherries” (originally a holly berry spring from the craft store at Christmas), a little black velvet bow, a pin back, transformed to create a cute piece. It reminds me so much of the novelty costume jewelry brooches of the early 1940s! In case you would like to make one, I wrote a mini tutorial.

What a good idea! I just love little details like this. They can truly make or break an outfit. In this case, it decidedly makes it!

Maggi February 15, 2010 at 08:28

Oh wow, that is an excellent idea! Thanks for the tutorial! :D

I’m crafting like a mad woman for a couple of swaps I’m doing, going to try and make some fabric flowers today!

Dusky Ledoux February 15, 2010 at 08:35

Ahhh what a cute brooch Casey! I love velvet!

I’ve been crafting a lot in the last couple of weeks – i opened an online store last night! It’s here: dusky-ledoux.blogspot.com So excited that you are re-opening your etsy shop!

Hope you are well lovely :)

What a great idea! Simple, but completely adorable :) And your blog is just too fun!

I finished crocheting a neckwarmer/ascot and started a snood this weekend.

Liliya Plotkina February 15, 2010 at 08:54

I *did* do something crafty…well, sort of. The SO wants me to make him a vest, so I purchased the fabric for that today. :)

Thanks for the great giveaway!

Nancy February 15, 2010 at 09:14

Oh what a clever pin! I didn’t end up making anything this weekend, but I made progress on reorganizing my sewing space, which makes me more likely to do something crafty this week.

Lauren February 15, 2010 at 09:20

Oh, how pretty! They immediately reminded me of the cherry outfit worn by Jeanne Crain in State Fair!

Dotti February 15, 2010 at 09:25

Oh, I’d love to enter for such a nice little pin as I’m not a very talented crafter myself (and didn’t craft anything lately). :(

Amanda February 15, 2010 at 09:28

Wow, you have perfect timing, I just bought fabric to start on a cherry blouse!

Kristin February 15, 2010 at 09:36

Sometimes the quick fixes are the most inspirational! Great little brooch!

frk.bustad February 15, 2010 at 09:38

It’s a lovely brooch, simple yet elegant! I’m glad you shared tutorials/the idea, so if I don’t win I can still have something similar! My crafty weekend was trying to fit a dress I’ve sewn and starting to assemble a skirt I cut ages ago…

Amy February 15, 2010 at 10:00

Very pretty Casey! You’re so creative. I made a batch of heart shaped sugar cookies with pink icing. I got the recipe off of the decorated cookie website. Yummy! Thanks for the tutorial. :)

Paige February 15, 2010 at 10:01

That’s so adorable. I have 5 brooches already, but I could always use another! :-D

mollymolly February 15, 2010 at 10:13

these are cute! I’m might just make one in case I don’t win haha

Shawnna February 15, 2010 at 10:14

So adorable! The perfect pop of color…great job!

This weekend, I finished up a little project for a friend’s daughter…a portable chalkboard made from chalkboard cloth and backed with the sweetest pink and brown cotton print.

Love, love, love your blog, especially the videos! I’ve learned so much from you!

Eva February 15, 2010 at 10:18

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m always a bit scared to ware brooches: I’m always afraid I will ruin my clothes with them or whatever :)
Really pretty though, should definitely give it another *brave* try.

Jill February 15, 2010 at 10:19

SO cute!

Darlene February 15, 2010 at 10:26

So, so pretty.

This weekend Virginia was quiet, meaning no snow to shovel! I took the opportunity to read and actually managed to eek out 4 miles on the treadmill.

Tonight, swing dance!

Christina February 15, 2010 at 10:32

Hi there Casey! I just recently found your blog and LOVE it!! Keep up the great work :-)

christina February 15, 2010 at 10:34

Victoria February 15, 2010 at 10:40

Love it! Such a simple, elegant little thing. Thanks!

Anna February 15, 2010 at 10:46

I love the cherry berry!

melissa February 15, 2010 at 11:15

i am the worst at tying bows–should definitely practice as i need more velvet bows in my life.

Sarah February 15, 2010 at 11:21

How darling! I love brooches…They give that extra jolt of individuality to an outfit.
I didn’t do anything so very crafty this weekend (my husband had some unexpected time off work because of snow and ice), but I am gearing up for some serious sewing over the next couple of weeks. My cousin is getting married in early March, and of course it is the perfect excuse for making myself a new dress!

nicole February 15, 2010 at 11:22

cute! thanks for doing such a fun give-away.

cecili February 15, 2010 at 11:22

Lovely idea! I’d surely love to have one^^

Jessica February 15, 2010 at 11:28

Casey, this is such a sweet accessory. I love how resourceful you are in using what you already have stashed away…a girl after my own heart! I would love to present this brooch to my 5 year old. Kit Kittredge is her inspiration so she has a growing collection of cardigans that could use an accent like this. Thanks for the tut though, in the event I can’t survive without my own!

Steph @ Tart Deco February 15, 2010 at 11:37

Adorable. If I don’t win I’ll have to drag out the vintage fruit that is still packed away somewhere. I moved in October, but we really have that much stuff. Sigh…. Time to start posting on etsy!

Julie February 15, 2010 at 11:39

Casey, I absolutely LOVE this idea!!! I would also LOVE to win it!! If not, I’m definitely going to try making it ;) This weekend I’ve been into making flower brooches and looking for ideas/inspiration for making them :) I believe sometimes an outfit may just be missing the right accessory to make it all it can be. . . most of the time a brooch will do it :) Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas with everyone :)

Lacy February 15, 2010 at 11:48

I love your inspiring blog Ms. Casey! :) You’re such a doll!

Anna February 15, 2010 at 11:51

Super cute brooch – a great idea!

QueenB (Yvonne) February 15, 2010 at 11:51

OMG that is just too cute.
Pick me! Pick me!

Syrena B. February 15, 2010 at 11:54

How Cute!!

marliesbs February 15, 2010 at 12:15

I love the tutorial… Too cute. You always have such great ideas. I found you from reading Burdastyle and I have been keeping up with your post weekly from there. Keep up the great work.

Gabriella February 15, 2010 at 12:28

What a great idea! I have been wanting a brooch like this for a long time, but the bakelite ones are just SO far out of my price range. I am so excited to try this tutorial. Thank you!!!

Rebecca February 15, 2010 at 12:31

Such a sweet brooch! The red berries look so pretty against the light blue knit. Like marliesbs says above, I too found you on Burdastyle. I think you were the very first blogger I started following :)

Stacey McEnerney February 15, 2010 at 12:32

I just love the cherry motif! My fingers are crossed for a win.

Blue Note February 15, 2010 at 12:36

fingers crossed

Madeline February 15, 2010 at 12:38

Give aways are so much fun! And that brooch is adorable! I have vintage one that is rather similar, but it just has green floral tape connecting it.

Viivi February 15, 2010 at 12:48

That’s one pretty brooch! I did start to hem a skirt on saturday, but then changed my mind and fell in love with the longer length!

Julia February 15, 2010 at 13:05

Aww, what a sweet idea! Thanks!

Kate February 15, 2010 at 13:28

It’s so lovely! Today I finished my polka dot skirt and yesterday I was sewing ’20 inspired chemise top (you made a “how to” for that pretty project long time ago)! So that is a lot of sewing for me ;) my blog – lovelykatiesart.blogspot.com

Rachel February 15, 2010 at 13:31

Super cute pin! Not only are those my two favorite colors but I adore cherries :)

Mugsy February 15, 2010 at 13:34

Simple, yet cute. Tres 40s chic! Of course I’ll enter my name – these things are so much fun! Thank you for your generosity of the tutorial, shall be attempting something like this myself sometime… :)

Paula February 15, 2010 at 14:03

Quite a lovely idea. Gives a nice finish to a casual cardigan. Those cherries would also look fabulous paired with a little black dress.
I didn’t do anything crafty during the weekend due to heavy amounts of cooking and baking. But today I got a step closer to starting my weaving project – new carpet on its way.

Erica February 15, 2010 at 14:08

Too adorable! I love little accents like these on outfits! Do you have other little craft ideas like these?

Drop Stitches Not Bombs February 15, 2010 at 14:16

What a delightful brooch – how generous of you to share a tutorial of how to make it. I always love reading your blog.

Heather February 15, 2010 at 14:36

Oh Casey! This is sooooo cute!!! :) I’ll have to keep this in mind to use up some of my leftover cherries from these cupcakes. :)

I had hoped to work on a few Valentine’s day things, but I didn’t get around to doing anything crafty this weekend. And really, if I’m doing anything crafty I should finish a baby blanket I’ve been working on… I’m already a month and half late.

Bella February 15, 2010 at 14:41

Oh, how cute. I love it. I would love to join this giveaway ^^

So far I have only mended a dress I have. But tomorrow I will decorate a pair of lace tights with sequins and pearls. I can’t wait, so fun :D

Best regards
Bella

DizzyDame February 15, 2010 at 14:42
