I thought you all might like a little peek into a new addition to my little vintage magazine collection! I had been unsuccessfully trying to win a few issues of “Seventeen” for the past months on Ebay; it seemed like every one I tried to buy went way out of my price range. So I’m super excited that one finally ended up in my hot little hands! lol. This one is from August 1949, and has a lovely overview of high school and collegiate fashion for that year. Enjoy!
[ velvet dresses always seem the height of luxury this time of year! ]
[ sweaters and pencil skirts... always a classic. ]
[ I love the plaid beret and amazing coat! ]
[ such a sweet design with a wing collar. ]
[ the fabric looks amazing! ]
[ interesting, over-sized pockets were very popular at this point. this skirt sports some fun ones! ]
[ swanky shoes! I'll take one of each, please--especially those saddle shoes! ]

The Back To School issue was always my favorite. I also remember having several velvet dresses for Christmas when I was younger. It was a big occasion to go Downtown to Garfinkel’s to look for my dress. I miss the days when you dressed for specific things. That has been one of the hardest adjustments for me. I still believe you should “dress” for occasions (large or small), but feel so out of place now if I do. I must be feeling nostalgic this morning!

wow! how incredibly fun!
Congratulations on your win! I love vintage magazines. The stripped dress is my favorite. Have a great day.
New follower! Love what you have here. My daughter who is 14 is enamored with the 40s and 50s and I’m very happy! I was always one to have my own style and I’m so happy that she is willing to go against the tide and have her own style. Thanks for all you share.
ps- I had lovely green saddle shoes when I was a cheerleader in middle school.
Casey, this is fantastic! I especially love the Jonathan Logan ads, since this summer we bought a *huge* estate of clothing from a woman who had many Jonathan Logan pieces. I’m going to post a link to your blog on mine–I bet some of my followers who have purchased Jonathan Logan dresses would love to see these ads!
Wow, Seventeen from 1949 looks a lot more interesting that Seventeen today!
Thanks so much for sharing!
Oooh, how lovely! I especially love the shoes!! I prefer the ones to the left of the saddle shoes, but they are all so nice!!
I bought a pair of creme/white saddle shoes a few months ago (10 Euro’s on the market!!!), and I am thinking of dying parts of them, to make them two-toned…
Thank you for sharing!
I’m absolutely addicted to vintage mags, but haven’t been able to get and Seventeens yet. The cover here is adorable!
Oh my gosh, those shoes! I’ll take one of everything! And that coat with the plaid lining! *swoon*
Lovely! Thank you so much for sharing pictures!
How I wish Seventeen, and all the other magazines I read in my youth, still portrayed women as smart, wholesome and fun-loving. Now the cover teens are half-naked, look half-wasted, and are grabbing some body part or other. Sigh.
goodness goodnes goodness! what a find!
Hello Casey,
I’ve seen you blog before but don’t know how to follow it… I truly enjoy your style! and that fact that your a beautiful, talented and a seamstress!!
I have been looking on ebay for vintage magazine as well but don’t want to pay alot for em tho… I’ll just have to wait for estate sale finds!

Sigh, they look so lovely! I want to wear dresses like that now!
Oh Casey, these are amazing! I love the Botany girl and also the ad showing the young lady in the coat and beret. Serious inspiration.

wow! the masthead is probably the only thing about the magazine that hasn’t changed…. well, that and the inspiration it has brought teenage girls alike over the years!
I love these! You know, the second to last picture looks like Doris Day! I wonder if she ever did any modeling…
Is there anything more fun than a free afternoon, curled up with a great vintage magazine? I think not!
I actually have a the very bottom shoes in the last ad. Adorable!
how adorable!
How funny to look at the back to school cover and think about how differently teenagers dress now.
I just love vintage magazines and your blog is quite lovely!
