[ A sketchbook of coats. September 1947. ]
I was paging through one of the vintage magazines I have yesterday evening, looking for something totally unrelated to this post, and my eye fell upon a series of beautifully illustrated ads for coats by Sportleigh (don’t you just love those old brand names?!). Being somewhat of a coat collector and pining for a cool weather trip up north, I thought it would be fun to post these! Perhaps you live in a region that is chilly enough to warrant a coat already? Even if you don’t, these ads are just lovely to look at and covet the beautiful coats from 1947! (Be sure to click each thumbnail for a larger view and to read the descriptions.) Which one is your favorite? What is your dream coat (bonus points for links to photos!)? I can’t wait for a chance to break out the lovely 60s, fur collared coat I thrifted earlier this year…
[ Love the coats, but the model's hairstyles are even better! September 1947. ]
[ Princess coats never go out of style (left). September 1947. ]
[ I adore the button detail on the left coat, and the tweed fabric on the right. September 1947. ]
[ Deep pockets, peter pan collar, double stitched sleeve. Perfect. September 1947. ]

Those are beautiful sketches. Dramatic but understated!
Lovely…sigh, if only I needed a coat.
These are lovely! I have a vintage coat fixation (particularly for 40′s/50′s coats) that is totally out of control. They’re a terrible thing to collect because they take up so much space but they’re so darn beautiful and wearable! Right now I’m really into skirted, shawl collar 50′s coats. I was outbid on one on Saturday and on Sunday I found one at a local shop for $22! To think I almost spent $90 on Ebay.
I love that style of illustration. We had a ton of old magazines in the house when I was growing up, and I came to associate it very directly with grown upness and glamour.
Oh I love the princess coat and the last one. Really gorgeous. Have a very nice day ! xx
Those ’40s coats are lovely but they always seem so long! Wouldn’t a short-ish one be absolutely amazing? Because I do love the shapes of them!
Ohh I do so love this style of illustration! Wonderful inspiration Darling!
You know, I have always coveted a swing coat. (Maybe tomorrow??!!) I really love the one with the button detail at the neck. That would be it for me!
Mom
I thrifted a remarkably similar vintage coat just a few weeks ago, and am IN LOVE with it!
oh the collar on that last one is too dreamy to be true! coats are one of my favourite vintage things to collect! probably because I live in canada and if i didn’t have a variety of them i’d look the very same every single day! hehehe.
Come up to Canada! It’s plenty cold here already. These coats are divine!
These are such wonderful ads! I just love all the coats and the hairstlyes are so great, lovely!
You’ve made me want to go out and find a wonderful vintage coat
beautiful sketches and awesome coats! unfortunately i live in an area where it’s cold enough for coats already.
My dream coat has always been the Burberry Trench, any Burberry Trench. Example: http://www.harpersbazaar.com/cm/harpersbazaar/images/HBZ1108OB014-de-39762731.jpg
It’s just so Imperialist and Romantic.
Wow, those are amazing! It is definitely cold enough for coats here, sadly.
those are so adorable and look so warm…wish i didn’t live in a place where i had to wear a winter coat to the gym today!
I wish I lived in a place where I could have a coat collection. I have one Winter coat and one trench coat for if it rains.
I love the princess coat! My dream coat is a princess coat with quite a lot of width in the skirt, sleeves pleated against cuffs, and a detacheble faux fur collar. I don’t have any pictures.. yet. But hopefully within the coming weeks =) I won’t be able to do it in my dreamfabric, but I will sew it anyway.
This coat was a thrift find from earlier this year. It’s getting cold around here, can’t wait to wear it again!
o these are absolutely adorable! i love the bottom one, so cute!!!
What great vintage advertisements. . .I have a bit of an obsession with vintage coats, I have to avoid the coat sections of thrift stores lest I chance another one!
