autumn giveaway

Hurrah! Time for a giveaway! It’s been a long, long time since my last giveaway! I love doing giveaways–it’s a way I can say “thank you” to all of you, my dear and cherished readers. You bring such joy and fun into my life, it’s a tiny way for me to try and give back.

This giveaway is for a charming, vintage bag. It’s a piece I found at an antique store recently, and was going to hoard for myself, but I decided would be the perfect piece for a giveaway. The outside is a lovely floral velvet, and the inside is fully lined. This bag looks a smaller than it is–it can hold quite a bit! I really love the pretty floral against the texture of the fabric–it’s so gorgeous! (Full disclosure: since this bag is vintage, it isn’t perfect. It has a few small spots, and the frame sometimes squeaks a bit when you’re opening it. But otherwise, it’s got lots of use left. I wouldn’t giveaway anything I wouldn’t keep in my own closet!!!)

To enter: leave a comment here (one per person, please) about anything you’d like–the outfit you’d fashion around this bag, your favorite blog, just to say “hi”… whatever catches your fancy! The giveaway will be open until November 1, 2009 (Sunday) at midnight. I will randomly pick a winner and announce them Monday (Nov. 2). This giveaway will be open to everyone–you don’t have to live in the US to qualify. Good luck dear friends!

Hi! That bag is too cute…the florals are perfect for fall…I need to add pieces like this to my wardrobe, because in LA, the leaves don’t really fall from the trees, and I miss it. Guess you can’t compete w/fall in New England, can you??!! Cute bag and blog!

    Hey there,
what an absolutely adorable purse! I love it because I think I would carry it while wearing casual clothes like a pair of jeans and a shirt, but I also think it would look good while wearing something more fancy like a dress or a skirt.
I also like the fact that it’s a vintage bad, coz that means it has got so many different stories to tell.

    Lots of love,
    Mikaela

Oooh, this purse reminds me of a vintage purse my mom gave me that she had in the seventies. It’s blue velvet with a floral lining and rhinestones placed just so that it forms a heart on the outside. It also reminds me that I need to dig it out and repair the strap and maybe even try to draft a pattern so I can make repros of it!

I once found a cardigan at Old Navy with a gorgeous pastel floral lining. It wasn’t well made, though, and the fabric shrunk before the lining.

    Dear Casey,
first I would like to thank you for the fact that you brought my long lost creativity back into my life (I suffer from schizophrenia). Schizophrenia paralyzes each creativity. Therefore I had no more hobby for years. Since I read your blog I have again fun at manual work. I knit for the moment a scarf (soon finished). :-) Shortly I would like to learn sewing. Please keep up the good work for me. In anticipation of many more creative possibilities

hmm … so the giveaway ends on first of november. so I’ll tell you, what I’ll do that way.
I’ll be at my cousin’s house, because it’s her birthday that day and it’s a holiday, too, in germany (it’s a pity, it’s on the weekend, I could need some free days). and so we’ll have coffee and cake. I’m just about to start her birthday present. I’ll give her a self- painted shirt and because she wants to become a doctor one day, I’ll paint the inside of a body on it, in a comic way, not really realistic. I hope, she’ll like it.

I love that dress. When I first saw I thought it was a genuine 40s one! Such a good find. I love the 80s does 40s items, not only are they usually cheaper, but they’re usually machine washable and a bit heartier ;)
Oh, that is such an adorable bag! It is so nice of you to be doing this giveaway, I’m excited :)
Hmmm, I’d wear a solid color dress, or skirt and shirt combo that brings out the colors in the bag.

Hey there! I have been reading your blog for the past two weeks now (it is great!) and I am a little embarrassed that this is my first comment – on a giveaway. But that bag is just too lovely and I really need a bigger bag right now (I just have tiny ones and hardly any money right now).
Anyway: I would probably pair it with my favorite black vintage shorts, lace tights and a nice thrifted vest over a black shirt and my vintage lace up granny ankle booties (that I scored at a thrift store for 2€!). Ooooh…it would also match my dark green vintage velvet dress that I bought at the Salvation Army this summer…mh..

Oh it’s so beautiful! I love the mary poppins-ness of it… can’t you just see a hatstand & vintage standard lamp emerging from its floral depths? Gorgeous! x

This is a lovely romantic bag that I would pair with curly hair, a white comfy scarf and a vintage wine color dress. Oh, and the perfect shade of red lipstick.

I love the velvet! Velvet has really been catching my attention lately–perhaps because it’s so toasty looking. Green would go beautifully with this, or perhaps grey, or….

I love this bag! It’s so hard to find unique vintage items in my town because all we have is charity shops full of junk! I would definately use this for school because I’d want to show it off to everyone! I’d add a brooch on it and be too cool for school :)

I look for fun bags ALL the time, but I can never seem to find any!! They are either damaged (and I don’t know that I have the patience or talent to repair them), or they are too epensive for a USED bag. I think the problem is *everything* here is an antique shop…not really a thrift store. And I do think there’s a difference, b/c the antique shops charge more b/c it’s “antique”. Bleh!!

Here’s a handbag story for you … I had a previous partner who hated me feeling asleep in bed before he even finished brushing his teeth. He’d be talking to me from the bathroom and I was already falling asleep. One night I was already half asleep while he was chatting away to me, and in my half-wake/half-sleep state I figured I’d have to say something to hold up my end of the conversation. But I was already starting to dream, and what I ended up saying out loud was: “That’s a nice handbag!” Which of course had nothing to do with the conversation he had been having. Oops. But in this case, the same comment applies. Casey, that really is a nice handbag, and I know I’m not dreaming!

    Hello Casey,
I do love that bag dearly. I think it is fabulous. But I also wanted to let you know how great of a website you have. Just today I found your website as I was online looking for videos of 40s hairstyles. I ran into your video on youtube of your hairstyle with hot rollers. After watching that I saw your website at the end of the video and had to check out your blogs. I think you are fabulous and I just love your style.Keep up the good work!

Yippee – what a lovely giveaway, Casey! I would probably pair the bag up with a light, floaty cream dress (since we’re entering summer here in Australia).

I’ve really enjoyed reading your blog so far(I only started about 4 months ago). My favourites of your posts so far are: your wedding post (you both looked so lovely, the photos were amazing & I love how you did it so cheaply but with such class); your recent ballgown post, and there’s another one but it’s just escaped my mind!
    Cheers!

Wow, such a pretty bag! I knew I lurked around this site for a reason! (ha, ha, just kidding – I must admit though, I’m becoming quite the fan) Between this site and “Destination 1940″ – delightful blog – has inspired me to take on a more vintage look around the office. More 1930′s to 1940′s seems to be my “thing”.
Thanks for all the time you put in on this site!

    Dear Casey,

Hi! I’m Brittany from New York. I love your blog. I myself love to shop thrift and vintage alike. I am currently living in Taiwan and though I love it here…they do not kn ow the meaning of thrift store, second hand, or vintage! They don’t believe in saving old things. So for now, I have been satisfying my thrift urges vicariously through your blog. I love the bag and I see that you would be willing to ship internationally! Hope I win!

I love your website with “my leg up”. Just a quick reference to the Joyologist from SNL. This bag would be a great companion in the great Pacific Northwest. But…since my beloved moved me from the great Emerald City to the dry and desolate desert, I feel compelled to represent “fall” in Tucson, AZ. I am desperately miss the amazing colors of the Pacific Northwest fall and I think this bag would cure my sorrow.

On a side note, your website material (blog, pictures, articles, etc.) always bring a smile to my day. I wish I had an ounce of ability when it comes to sewing or creating great vintage looks. Viewing your website lets me live out my that desire. Thank you.
