Happy first day of September!!! I’m so excited today; this month just seems ripe with things yet done, projects to be started (including the gown I need for the Navy Ball coming up!), and places to be seen. Do you have any special wishes for this month?

I wandered down to the mailbox yesterday morning to drop some things off for Monday’s pick up, and checked our mail. My box of yarn from Knit Picks had been delivered over the weekend! Which of course made me laugh because I could have gotten quite a bit of knitting done if I had known it was waiting for me, but it was probably just as well I was blissfully unaware (I sewed instead)! lol. That being said, I did manage to get started on the new cardigan yesterday evening, and cast on the back, knitted the bottom band and started the body knit pattern. I’m so excited! The only thing is I think I didn’t order enough yarn… oops! It’s looking beautiful so far; the yarn is a lovely weight and very soft.

Speaking of sweaters… One of my favorite things to do is refashion and restyle sweaters to fit my needs. So many times I run across a sweater that is a luxurious fiber, or maybe the perfect color, or just something that catches me eye. But maybe the style isn’t the most flattering (read: boxy!) and I have to refit it to make it work. I have a couple ideas for tutorials on how to refashion your own cardigan; would anyone be interested? It seems like a great, thrifty project for early autumn…

Yes, tutorial! I need something cheap to do whilst on unemployment.

Hanne September 1, 2009 at 19:06

A tutorial would be fantastic! I can’t believe how fast you are able to knit and sew. I wish that I could be half as good as you!

Sam September 1, 2009 at 19:19

I love remaking sweaters… one of my favorite recons! Cardigans are something I’m wary of making myself, though, so a tutorial would be really awesome.

Jennifer September 1, 2009 at 19:21

Yes please! A tutorial would be lovely!!!

Rebecca September 1, 2009 at 19:26

You bet I’d be interested! I have at least two sweaters that need some revamping but I’ve hesitated to start for fear I’d end up with a pile of ravelings.

Marmielu September 1, 2009 at 19:44

Your mother would be very interested in the sweater remake tutorials. You know me – I gotta see it done.

The yarn looks beautiful!

Kelley Anne September 1, 2009 at 20:22

That would be great! I’ve had the same experience, but have no idea how to refashion a sweater. Thanks!

Erin September 1, 2009 at 20:23

Pls share your rescue recipes for boxy sweaters! There’s a cute cardi on the cover of the Sew Stylish fall issue that was made from a man’s sweater. I’m always looking for reasons to peruse the thrift store.

Kathy September 1, 2009 at 20:56

Ooh, I’d love a tutorial for refitting sweaters. May I ask, how easy to read is that particular pattern? It looks like something I’d love to knit up.

Lauren September 1, 2009 at 21:33

Oooh! Yes, please! I always am finding sweaters I like in thrift stores and lamenting their cut or size!
Your hands are so very pretty. Looks kind of like a 40s advert to knit for troops!

Alyssa September 1, 2009 at 22:55

Yes please! I pass up so many cardigans because of bad fitting. Do you know what your gown will look like?

Heidi September 1, 2009 at 23:15

I have a vintage 40′s vogue knitting book that is crying out to be refashioned! I can’t wait!

Hana September 1, 2009 at 23:31

I would love to see a tutorial on how to remake a cardigan!!! I have a lot of them, but some of them are, as you put it, “boxy” and others I’m just a little bored with haha good luck on the sweater you’re knitting! I can’t wait to see how it comes out! =)

Elle September 2, 2009 at 01:13

Yes please Casey!!! I’d love it! I have a mending/to-be-refashioned box in my studio that’s housing more than a couple of boxy cardigans.

Josie September 2, 2009 at 01:40

I can’t wait to see it! I love the colour!

jolene September 2, 2009 at 02:26

Ooo, I’d love to see a tutorial! I have the same thing happen with thrifted sweaters, so yes!

Rhiannon September 2, 2009 at 03:43

I can’t wait to see this sweater you’re knitting! And I’m so glad you love Knitpicks too . . . I’ve gotten flack for not getting the fancier stuff, but Knitpicks yarn works just great, and it’s so cheap to knit up a sweater!!

Carlotta September 2, 2009 at 04:00

Yes! Please post these tutorials, I’d be eager to read them!
I’ve got a 70′s book called ‘the yestermorrow clothes’ that very briefly explains how to refashion sweaters, and with raglan-sleeved ones (partly thanks to Sarai’s great tutorial) it seems rather easy, but when it comes to entirely cutting and re-making the sweater, well, I must admit it’s quite frightening to think I might somehow waste some good, fifty years old material…
By the way, the texture of the sweater you’re currently knitting seems great!

I’d definitely be interested in the tutorials! =]

Iris September 2, 2009 at 08:12

your blog is just great! :)
a tutorial would be so inspiring as you:)
xx from madrid!

Kate in Belgrade September 2, 2009 at 09:14

Oh yes! I would also love to see tutorials, especially if you have ideas for a couple different styles. Even when I do have cash to buy new, it’s challenging to find flattering styles.

Christine H. September 2, 2009 at 09:50

Casey, you should know by now that we will never turn down a tutorial offer. :D Yes & please!

That yarn is such a pretty color—do keep us updated on your progress. I have yet to knit anything as complicated as a sweater or cardigan, but this might just be the year I give it a go.

marjorie September 2, 2009 at 10:33

Oh, I’ll have to agree with everyone and say “Yes, please!!” That would be a most interested and enlightening post, indeed! I agree about boxy sweaters….they don’t do me any justice either, I’m afraid! tee hee!! :)

Oh, I do envy your knitting skills! All I can manage is a straight scarf! tee hee! Can’t wait to see the beautiful finished sweater! :)

Steph in Canada September 2, 2009 at 10:33

I would definitely be interested in tutorials on restyling sweaters. I do a lot of thrifting!

Sal September 2, 2009 at 10:37

Oh my gosh, PLEASE post a cardi refashioning tutorial!

Gordita September 2, 2009 at 11:23

I’m completely interested. I have a thing for cardigans and would love ideas on how to refashion them.

Lizzy September 2, 2009 at 12:10

Yes, I would absolutely love a sweater re-fashioning tutorial :) The coming of fall has definitely gotten me in the mood to start some new knitting projects. I just love the color you chose for the cardigan your making, can’t wait to see it when it’s done. :)

Emily Carroll September 2, 2009 at 13:57

I too join the choruses of agreement that a cardigan tutorial would be amazing!

Rosie September 2, 2009 at 14:53

Please, please please do a cardigan refashioning post!

Julia September 2, 2009 at 15:00

oooh oooh yes please, I would LOVE any sweater refashioning ideas and tutorials would (as would a lot of people it seems like ;-) . The thought of refashioning sweaters didn’t even occur to me until I saw a post of yours where u refashioned a chartreuse/parrot green cardigan and jazzed it up with some pink lace trim. I’ve been obsessed since and always looking for more ideas (I have a cardigan/sweater obsession to begin with – not the most practical thing since I live in California ;-) . Love ur style Casey. Congrats on the MS wedding blog piece – awesome!!

k a t September 2, 2009 at 15:01

Oh yes, do! I’ve been playing with sweaters, cutting them up to be cardigans but I’d love to see more and maybe hear some tips on finishing them so they look “done”? Thanks!

Emma Wallace September 3, 2009 at 00:24

I would love a tutorial! I am more of a crocheter but I absolutely adore sweaters and can only imagine what wonderful doors this new knowledge would open.

Michell Adams September 3, 2009 at 09:29

I would love to see a tutorial! I’m always trying to refashion, but then it turns into something hideous! Anything that you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Caf September 5, 2009 at 19:40

oh yes please! I get so frustrated with boxy cardigans when they could look so pretty…. :)

rachel September 6, 2009 at 17:33

yes please! A tutorial would be wonderful. I always find sweaters and cardigans made with just beautiful yarn at thriftstores but with the most terrible fits.
