personal style challenge: the romper

personal style challenge: the romper

[ trying on the romper. sorry for the fuzziness of the photos; I took them with my cell! ]

After a less-than-successful day of thrifting (two out of the 4 places I had on my list were closed!), I decided to swing by Anthropologie on a lark. You all know I have an obsession with Anthropologie and have years worth of their catalogs saved for inspiration alone! Going into the store is always a treat, since I love browsing not only the clothes and home goods, but soaking up the creative vibes. Although, I have to admit, lately Anthro hasn’t been thrilling me quite like it used to. But while I was wandering around, I spotted this adorable, Scottie print romper.

Yes, romper. The style that I love on other people, but have shied away from adding to my own wardrobe. I’ve been convinced that with all my “junk in the trunk”, I couldn’t wear one without looking ridiculous. This piece was so cute, I trotted off to the fitting rooms before I had a moment to give it a serious thought. Although this one was a size too big (they didn’t have my size in stock), I was delighted with how it did look. It just goes to show me that cut is everything. (Just like shade/tint is everything when it comes to wearing colors!) Sadly, this piece was a little too spendy for my wallet, but it still was fun to try on. Now I’m thinking how I could make a similar romper! lol. (I know–running away with my ideas again!) Seems like the perfect style for this Florida weather: the ease of a dress (one piece) with the coolness of shorts.

Have you ever had one of those “aha!” moments with a style you hadn’t tried before? I think it’s good to push yourself stylistically from time to time; it always opens up new possibilities for one’s wardrobe!

looks adorable on you! and actually looks more like a top and shorts instead of a romper. usually rompers are all one color/same fabric so its more obvious that its one piece. maybe that’s why you like it. regardless, so cute!!

Oh it is very flattering! Rompers can be tricky, but this one is adorable. I can’t wait to see what you come up with:)

This looks great on you! I have always been afraid to wear rompers. Everyone has witnessed a time when someone’s romper has gone terribly wrong. Or at least I have, and it sort of scared me away from them. But this has inspired me to give the next romper I like a shot!

Way cute! I like this because the contrast bodice makes it look less like a toddler’s outfit (which is what I think most rompers end up resembling). This actually looks sophisticated!

I know exactly what you mean. I’ve always loved the look of high-waisted skirts, but thought I couldn’t wear them. Well, my mom made me try some on for fun and it turns out they look amazing on. Who knew? Sometimes you just need to go out on a limb.

I’m looking forward to seeing your romper experiment!

That romper is adorable on you! I’d love to see you make up a 40s one, with little sleeves and out of a classic novelty print :-)

I have definitely had those “aha!” moments, both with colors I thought I could never wear and styles too. I agree that the right shade/tint and right fit make all the difference.

Casey, I totally tried this on too! I loved it. I especially liked how the dog print looked like houndstooth from a distance–so clever! It took a lot of willpower not to buy it on the spot. I had the same idea to try to mimic the shape. The question is: where will we find scottie dog fabric? :)

Yay! I’m not the only one who stashes away Anthropoligie magazines!

Those are absolutely star-striking dressing room pics, Casey. How can you look so gorgeous while shopping?

I totally and completely fell in love with the romper this spring. There are times when I have difficulties with dresses or skirts just because I can turn into a flailing little thing, but the romper has the chicness of a dress without the embarrassment if something goes awry.

The fit can be harder on some people, but it looks like you found one that works! I once tried on a great little romper at Anthropologie I couldn’t afford too. Like much of that store, I loved it, but couldn’t get it.

I dont think you could ever have junk in the trunk Casey! hehe. The romper is beautiful, and this is a very timely post for me! I have been making a romper for the past couple of days, and will be posting pictures of it at the weekend! I just love them! They are so cute and practical!
    Hope you are well :)

Ooh, you should make one!!! Lately I’ve been seeing dresses online and then wondering how I can make d.i.y. versions of them to save money, and it’s all because of you and your d.i.y./embellishment posts, I think! I bet you could make a romper just like the Anthro one, only with your luck it would actually come out even cuter!

Thanks for your always inspirational posts.

Hi! I was wondering where you took these photos before I read the post. I knew those hardwood floors were somewhere. And, yes, I agree with you on the lack of anything knock-your-socks-off at Anthro. You know, I noticed that when I went to ours recently.

I love that on you! I have no had a chance to wear a romper this year – but I don’t think there ever is much, in England

How fun to branch out, and have such success! Perhaps you can stitch up a romper instead. I had my ah-ha when I realized that straightleg jeans look fab on me … almost despite my curves.

Oh how funny you and I are Antropologie twins. I have years worth of catalogs too, and go in there to get inspired :) Last week I went and there were not any clothes I wanted, but the atmosphere is so wonderful I want to live there. The Portland one always smells so amazing.

Cute cute cute romper! You could make and even more adorable one.

…now I want to go look through my catalogues ;)

Well, you look adorable, but that’s not a surprise. ;-)

I’ve seen rompers (or “dancing attire”) from the 30′s that I thought were sweet, but they were never strapless. I can’t seem to get up the nerve to wear strapless things, so maybe I’ll have to make myself one of the non-strapless styles. Then I can try my best to look like an ingenue auditioning for a Broadway musical. (oh, dear, I think I’ll have to get rid of a LOT of junk in my trunk first! ;-)

you actually inspired one of my “aha” moments! i threw a 1950′s housewife themed bridal shower and found your blog while looking for inspiration. i did my hair all up and wore red lipstick and pearls… and then realized i can wear them regularly to fulfill my longing to dip into vintage.

    i got nothing but compliments!

Ooh that romper is too cute on you! I bet you could make an even more fabulous one and for a LOT less than what they were charging!

I too LOVE Anthropologie, I wish my whole house looked like their stores! That’s a really great idea to save the catalogs, I need to start doing that!

    xoxo

That romper is so adorable! I just love the little Scottie dogs. It looks so cute on you. I definitely would be too chicken to try to pull off a romper myself, as I have some “junk in the trunk” as well, haha. I can’t wait to see if you recreate this romper.
Anthropologie is the greatest. I have a hard time parting with any of my catalogs from there as well, if I hard the money I would definitely own half to their clothing from every new season ;) But I agree, it seems to me like the clothing from all my fav spots just hasn’t been as cute as usual lately, Anthropologie included.

Cool blog! I’ve been eyeing the scottie romper Forever and just googled some images of girls wearing it in action and I thought I’d let you know that it has finally gone on sale online (as of, like, yesterday) for about $60! It’s so cuuute! Can’t wait for it to arrive!
