Allow me a momentary rant (uncharacteristic as it might be on this blog!): some days technology frustrates me to no end! I spent most of the past three days wondering what was going on with my computer, running countless virus scans and having my husband give it a look to see if he could make heads or tails. Turns out, it was just a program I installed that my computer didn’t “like”. Blah! So now I’m getting caught up on all the emails (does one ever get caught up? lol) and blog posts I didn’t read most of this week. So my apologies if you’ve been waiting for a reply from me; I’m going to try and tackle everything over the next few days. Alrighty, got that out of my system–on to the happy stuff!

So how was your week (I feel so disconnected being largely away from my Google Reader this week)? I think the most excitement I had (aside from our truly wacky schedule; my sleeping patterns are quite wacky now!) was getting my hair cut. I decided to keep it pretty long, so it was more of a trim than anything else. As much as I loved the shorter cut that allowed me to do really tightly curled 40s looks, in my heart, I love my hair mid-back length. (Which is, incidentally, perfect for Veronica Lake style ‘dos!) I’m hoping to try out some new things next week with my hair, now that it’s a bit more uniform. hehe!

friday favorites

  • Gertie has generously shared her fantastic know-how on making a gathered skirt: part one and part two.
  • An utterly fantastic article interviewing stylish bloggers for their tips on wearing vintage hats.
  • Sal wrote a great post on incorporating vintage into the modern wardrobe!
  • These lace jellyfish are way too cute! I could see them hanging up in a cluster near my desk…

Today’s vintage image is from late 1940. Despite my sometimes feeling guilty that I’ve lately ignored other eras I adore (like the 50s), I guess I haven’t worked the 40s out of my system yet! I’ve been continuing my distraction with dresses too; figuring how to make them a bit more fall appropriate (though when it’ll cool off, who knows!): bracelet length sleeves, higher necklines, jaunty coats! (Yes, coats. I bemoan the fact that I really don’t need a heavy winter coat down here. I’d faint for a glamorous number like the one on the far right!) hehe! With all the autumn wardrobe posts that have been popping up around blogland, I can’t help being a bit seduced by the idea! lol

Have a lovely weekend, dear friends!

i can completely relate to the technology rant– somehow i got 9 viruses even with norton, spybot, and anti-malware…and i do not even go to sketchy sites (if you know what i mean). where do they come from? and why?

Hi Casey,

I just stumbled across another blog called Sew Retro. One of the recent postings referred to a website called the Commercial Pattern Archive. I’d never heard of it but perhaps you have? It made me think immediately of you. They have patterns from 1860 to the present and as I understand it, you can download them and print them out at home. It’s a subscription service, but this weekm they’re having a free trial. I thought you and your readers would get great pleasure scrolling through their patterns. The website is http://www.uri.edu/library/special_collections/COPA/index.php and from there you go to search and when asked to login you can type guest and pattern as the password. I somehow think that you’ll be in bliss (as I was!!).

xx,

Hi Casey,
Totally agree, I love the fall! Fall and proper winters with huge mounds of snow has to be the great advantage of living in northern Sweden. But for everybody who lives further south, think of it this way; in december you may not have 4 ft of snow, but you’ll have more than 2 hours of daylight ; ) That’s really a problem for later though, right now it’s not really cold yet, but it’s something in the air, something cool, fresh. The sky is high and oh so pale blue. Love it!
I’m trying to decide what style my new winter coat will be in, maybe early 40s…
Sorry, ranting. Loved the pics, beautiful as ever! Sending positive thoughts to your computer, know the frustration when techique just doesn’t work.

Elise: Thank you, thank you! What a wonderful page!
