inspiration week #91

Thank you all so much for your feedback on last week’s inspiration week post! I think for now I’m going to keep the format the same, and maybe tweak things going forward a tiny bit. At this point, I’m so bad about preparing these posts before Friday, that I’d hate to neglect them if I made it any bigger! I kind of view the Friday posts like a precursor to the weekend; winding down a bit after a long week. hehe!

- More hatmaking fun: Marjorie recently took a straw hat and remade it into a darling 1840s bonnet! I think this would be fun to do for straw hats of other eras too!
- I have been so inspired by this sweet little sewing and craft spot nestled in a closet.
- Rhianon took some plain shoes and added some darling bows to make them super cute!
- The buzz is starting for the new season of Mad Men, and there has been some excellent blog posts being written about fashions of the period.
- Gertie sparked an interesting and thoughtful discussion this week regarding vintage styles and feminism.

Dresses have been on my mind this week. I think perhaps I’m bored with separates at the moment. Skirts and blouses have their place, but there is something unique about the fact that you can put on a dress and you’re done (except for accessories!). Maybe it’s the late summer weariness that’s making me feel this way? It must be, the majority of the dresses floating through my imagination are of a decidedly autumn feel. I especially love the dress on the far right; the button placket down the left side is so unique and fun! I wonder though how flattering it would be in real life; it strikes me as one of those styles that requires being worn over proper vintage undergarments. Since button closures have a tendency to gape going over curves. I have to admit though, after writing all that about dresses and how I’m down on skirts and blouses right now, the separates on the top left of the page are quite fetching! I’m so changeable when it comes to fashion…
This weekend I think we’re planning some of the usual errands, grilling and relaxing. There was talk about a trip to the beach, but Sailor Husband and I have discovered we really don’t care for the water temperature in the middle of summer. We both grew up frequenting the mid Atlantic beaches where the sand was hot and the water cold. Here, it’s like warm bathwater! So I think the general consensus is that if we can’t get any relief from the relentless sun and humidity, it’s not worth the drive. Silly, I know! But I’d rather wait until the fall anyway. Enough of my ridiculous ramblings! hehe. I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Ah, I too am always changing my mind about dresses versus separates. I always feel separates are easier to pull off in modern society. But dresses are so much more whimsical! I’m so excited for Mad Men! I even am selling a Peggy-like pattern in my shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5494098).

Oh, That black kitty at the bottom right looks like our own Puffin-kitty!! Puurrrrrr!
Thank You ever so much for your kind mention of my little bonnet project, Sweet Casey!
You beautiful felt hat project from earlier in the week has inspired me to attempt a 20th century chapeau (perhaps….in the near future….if I ever crawl out from under my growing list of things to do, both shop related and from my sewing table pile!!) tee heeThanks for all the lovely inspiration!
Happy Weekending to you! -

Hi Casey,
On your comment about the warm water, I am guessing you went to the Gulf side of Florida (west coast). Check out the Atlantic side on the east coast. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale so I prefer the calmer, warmer waters in the summer. But now I currently live in north Florida and usually head over to St. Augustine or Jacksonville for the beach and boy is it cold! Definitely refreshing on a summer day.

i think this post (content, amount of content, photos, etc) was just perfect and i would love to continue seeing these posts every friday!
i know what you mean about wondering how that dress would look in real life…i’m often charmed by an illustration on a vintage pattern but if i try to imagine the finished garment it often doesn’t work for me. i mean, some of those dresses from the 40s look just like the dresses from the 80s that i would normally think, i would never wear that!

Come to Canada! Then you can have cold sand AND cold water. Very, very, VERY cold water.

I feel the same about dresses. So easy to wear, so comfortable, and so elegant at the same time… I love your Inspiration as always…

hehe, you’re so cute!!! I know what you mean about dresses! Really, I think I must wear a dress 6 days a week, haha.
I also, know what you mean about warm beach water! I’ve been going to the pool lately, because even the water here is quite warm!
Have a lovely weekend!

I love that little craft spot nestled in the closet, that is just the cutest, makes me want one! I love the dresses, so pretty! I agree, it is much easier to just throw on a dress than to have to think about tops and bottoms that match in a cute way, etc.

Hope you have an absolutely lovely weekend!

Right, you’ve done it now! After months of working about 50 hours a week, I haven’t had anytime for sewing. That stops now! I am off to sew a new dress for Miss 5 from some of my lovely vintage children’s patterns. Thank you Casey for an ‘elegant’ kick in the behind! xx Always, SKM

Great links, loved the feminist discussion. And it seems we think so much alike! I just saw a dress on ebay and had to go rummaging through my vintage patterns to see if I could find a look alike and I did! I plan on making it now that my skirt is finished.

For a closer trip than the Atlantic, check out the many springs Florida has. The temperature year round is 68-72 degrees and sooo beautiful! The springs that are State Parks are usually worth the drive. If you go in the summer, try a weekday so that it’s not as packed on the weekends.

Great inspiration! Especially the link to Gerties blog, it was a really interesting discussion and I’ve added her blog to my favorites now =)
And the pattern covers are as always beautiful.
Hope you had a lovely weekend! I’m wishing it was that warm here, but when one chooses to live in northern Sweden… (it’s as far north as Alaska) the summer, while wonderful, tends to be really short. Wouldn’t trade the glory of the midnight sun for anything though. And fall is not so bad either. =)
Cheers!
