07.16.09 {midsummer, fifties style}

[ 07.16.09 | midsummer, fifties style. ]

  •  Top: refashioned from this
  •  Shorts: made by me
  •  Bracelet + Earrings: thrifted, MET Museum store
  •  Shoes: Chinese Laundry; ebay

If you keep up with my Twitter, you probably noticed that yesterday was a Designated Sewing Day. It was also quite hot and humid, so combining the activity and weather, something light and comfortable seemed in order! (Also something that I could sprawl around the floor in; I tend to have things spread out and about while in the midst of a sewing project.) Ironically, considering what I was doing, both the shorts and top were sewn by me. hehe!

The top is actually a refashion of one of a knit top I made last year. I wasn’t wearing the top very much and had gotten tired of it taking up room in my closet. Plus, I had been looking at pictures of vintage swim suits from the 1950s, admiring the glamorous strapless styles! I cut down the top and shirred the center front to give it the feel of the styles of swim suit bodices from the era. Not exactly, but close enough (and a free project! lol). I’ve been wearing it a ton–it’s so comfy!

I’m afraid I won’t have a formal inspiration post today… I have to admit I’ve been spending all week catching up on my blog roll and Flickr, and thus don’t feel prepared to do a satisfying post per the usual! I feel so awful… hopefully no one will miss it this week? Just in case, here are a handful of fun links–enjoy!

  •  One of my favorite Flickr contacts has a lovley new blog–hurrah!
  •  I had just been musing on the very topic of sewing on a budget, and Lauren wrote about it.
  •  Solanah revealed the secret to wearing snazzy vintage glasses!

Now I am going back to my sewing (and cooking–I have a ton of both to do today!). Have a lovely, fun weekend, dears!

I checked out the “before” photos of your top on Flickr and love how many permutations it’s been through! This one is great… you did such a great job with the sweetheart neckline.

If I could wolf-whistle over the Internet, I’d TOTALLY do it. ;)

Oh, I just love the outfit. Those yellow shorts are adorable, I try to never be seen in shorts (because I’m not a fan of my thighs ;) ) but shorts that cute would be worth it. And I love the top, reminds me of the black and white stripe famous Barbie swimsuit. Makes me wish I wasn’t rubbish at sewing.
Happy sewing and cooking!

You are so fun and inspiring. What a great blog you have! I adore vintage—my style is a little bit different (i’m more a 60s/70s gal)—but I just love seeing all the sassy cute things you come up with. Can I also just say your blog design is amazing? I have major blog envy here….have a fabulous weekend!

I think everyone else has said what I wanted to about the shorts! They’re also a fab colour.
And thank-you for the link! I feel so privileged to have you say I’m one of your favourite flickr contacts. =D

oh you look gorgeous! and great links – I especially love the one of sewing on a budget, tips we all could use in the recession.

Nancy Solla July 19, 2009 at 19:54

What a great outfit! I love wearing black with brights, and this really works. You probably said this somewhere, but what pattern did you use for the shorts? I’m looking for a pattern like this and just love these.

You look lovely! I love the yellow shorts and those sandals, too!

P.S. I’m hosting a WeLoveColors tights giveaway on my blog if you fancy that kind of thing :)
