what’s in my sewing basket…

Thank you all so much for your sweet comments and such on my Monday post! I was a bit unsure if I came across as bragging (I hope not!)–but I was too excited and thankful to keep it to myself. hehe!

I’ve been enmeshed in sewing this week (well, most of the week… lol!), and the results are starting to get exciting! I drafted a pair of shorts in a 1940s/50s style last week, and made this yellow pair as a “working muslin”. Basically I cut out a test version and it didn’t need any alterations, so I decided to finish it. They’re almost done! I also cut a pair out of denim, which I need to finish by the weekend… I’m pretty pleased with how they’re turning out and the fit. I normally really dislike how I look in shorts and feeling so exposed, but somehow I think the higher waist evens everything out.

Hopefully a more interesting post tomorrow…

I love that shade!!!! They look great – you know, I always love your construction. I’ve been amazed at how you take the time to make things look un-homemade. I’m too impatient. Have fun wearing them.
PS..love the sketches, too!

Sal June 10, 2009 at 09:52

Those are gonna be GORGEOUS! Can’t wait to see you model them, beautiful.

Kelley Anne June 10, 2009 at 10:00

They are lovely. I’m curious how you learned to sew. Did you take classes? I’ve been trying to find one that fits into my schedule, but no luck. Also, could you recommend a good beginners sewing book? Thanks ever so much!

I am absolutely insanely jealous that you can wear that colour fabric! :) I’m sure you’ll look absolutely fabulous in both those and the denim pair!

Your plans for each outfit and their designs are so beautifully drawn and so detailed. And I know what you mean about high waisted shorts some-how seeming less exposed. The only pair of shorts I wear is high waisted, as me and normal shorts don’t seem to get on!

Katy xoxo
p.s. you didn’t come across as bragging at all on Monday’s post! Just delighted at a wonderful present :) I hope you’re enjoying working on/with all that you got sent!

Nadja June 10, 2009 at 10:20

I love the shorts! How are they constructed (were is the fly?)

Mary June 10, 2009 at 10:35

What lovely drawing skills you have! I must admit, I am quite jealous of your pattern drafting skills as well…

Ms.Cleaver June 10, 2009 at 10:56

This is a plenty interesting post! I love your sketches. I love to see a more in-depth look at your design process? Maybe a future post?

Corinna June 10, 2009 at 11:14

wow you can draft patterns for pants yourself? i can only do tops/dresses which is kinda simple. and another wow at your drawing skills, you’re really talented!

lauren June 10, 2009 at 11:22

Those look fabulous! Quite lovely! And I love your sketch :)

I was making shorts yesterday, too… great minds think alike!

Fleur June 10, 2009 at 11:25

Wow, amazing stuff Casey! I am in love with the shorts, and also with your artistic talent. I have a half made pair of 40s shorts which I chickened out of finishing when my sewing course finished… I just can’t manage it on my own! ;)

anja louise June 10, 2009 at 11:27

I knew the shorts would be amazing! I love your little sketches too, so cute.

Amanda Nicole June 10, 2009 at 11:39

Ooo, can’t wait to see the final results! I already love that button :)

Poke Salad Annie June 10, 2009 at 12:07

Jennifer June 10, 2009 at 12:48

To echo everyone else, looking forward to seeing the finished result!

Great sketches, by the way. :)

Erin June 10, 2009 at 13:00

Those are fabulous! I agree about not liking to wear shorts, but the high-waisted ones are an exception. Can’t wait to see!

Bettie Booh June 10, 2009 at 13:03

They look adorable =)

Blair June 10, 2009 at 13:58

Hehe, you didn’t sound like you were bragging at all! Some bloggers come off fairly pretentious – but that’s definitely not you. :)

Your sketch is stunning!

<3

Maggi June 10, 2009 at 14:34

I can’t wait to see them finished!

Le Tasché June 10, 2009 at 14:49

I am really impressed that you do sewing according to your own sketches. I always need some patterns.

Lauren June 10, 2009 at 15:52

Wow, so no pattern at all here? I noticed you got some old patterns in your batch of goodies. Are you planning to try any of those out?

elena June 10, 2009 at 16:12

they’re going to be lovely! :)
have a beautiful rest of the week!

Maegan June 10, 2009 at 16:28

Toooo cute!!! Love them.

Lise June 10, 2009 at 16:38

Not only are you talented at sewing, but your drawings are fabulous! I hope that you soon will come up with a post so that we can see how your new pair of shorts look like.

Sara June 10, 2009 at 16:59

I love that little notch in the back of old bottoms. Why don’t they do that anymore? Also, ADORING the yellow!

jen June 10, 2009 at 17:00

really, so cute! can’t wait to see them when they’re all done!

maria June 10, 2009 at 17:11

Such an awesome idea. I bet they’ll look adorable on you!

Cece June 10, 2009 at 18:13

What a talented girl you are! Not only are the shorts darling, your sketch is quite fetching too!
Best wishes darling Casey,
Cece

Kate June 10, 2009 at 20:33

I can’t wait to see the finished result! I just got a vintage short/capri pattern off Ebay… I tried sewing a pair with no pattern, but couldn’t *quite* pull that one off…. :-P

Nadia June 11, 2009 at 00:00

I’m quite jealous that I can’t sue that well yet. I really only have a beginner’s knowledge of sewing. LOVED your sketches. Can’t wait til I’m whipping up sewing projects of my own, and making them look just as beautiful as your creations.

Ulrika / The Freelancer's Fashionblog June 11, 2009 at 00:58

Those shorts will be great for sure!Adn it’s so true, even though the shorts may be really short you never feel too exposed or bare in high waiset ones! It’s the same like jumpsuits, the short legs don’t feel bad lika a short dres might somehow.

Aya June 11, 2009 at 01:49

It’s amazing to me, how talented you are! :) Drafting and sewing all by hand… amazing. I can’t wait to see the result! :D

Andrea June 11, 2009 at 04:35

I can’t wait to see the yellow shorts!

Sam June 11, 2009 at 09:25

Those are going to be ADORABLE!
I positively WISH i could draft patterns and draw the way you do! Did you take classes or did you just practice?

Alyssa June 11, 2009 at 09:48

What a stunning shade of yellow! I’ve a pattern for a similar pair that I’ve been trying to get around to making but I have no money for the fabric I want.

NoirGirl June 11, 2009 at 17:44

I love the yellow shorts! Your sketch is gorgeous, too. I never draw faces on my sketches, just the clothes. :)

I hate the way I look in shorts, too. I’ve been trying to get over it this summer. I’ve got a high-waisted pair of white shorts on my sewing to-do list. Hopefully, it’ll be my next project!
