I always love receiving emails from people who read my blog, and this week I got a really fun one from Christine. She told me she had been watching my hair tutorial videos on YouTube and wanted to share some photos of her 40s inspired looks. She was kind enough to allow me to share these photos with you all! I just love the pageboy and the half-updo style that was inspired by a 1937 movie. She told me she uses foam rollers and a setting lotion, and offered these helpful tips about using a setting lotion:

  • I find that if I use plenty of setting lotion on damp (almost dry) hair that the curls will last 2-3 days. I used to use my mother’s mousse and gel when I was in high school and they never seemed to work very well. My hair doesn’t curl easily (forget heat styling!) so I was very surprised when I started using the setting lotion that it made such a difference. The curl is more like a natural curl– when you bounce it springs into a tighter curl, not out of the curl like when you heat style. The term “lotion” is a bit misleading– it’s actually a thin liquid. I’m sure there are several brands out there, but Wella’s Elan is what I use (the Extra Hold formula). I get it from the local Sally’s Beauty Supply.

Aren’t her hair do’s gorgeous? Thank you so much, Christine for sharing these! I’m inspired (and can’t wait to get my hands on some setting lotion; something I haven’t tried yet)!

I’ve never even heard of setting lotion! Must check that out – Christine’s ‘dos are all amazing.

Like you and Sal, I have to try out this setting lotion! My hair is super fine, so it tends not to hold curls very well… though I’m ALWAYS coveting them!

I’m so glad you posted this, Casey! I used to use Dep 8 in the pink tube but they stopped making it and I’m not spending $30.00+ to buy a whole case. I’m getting my hair cut today in the Long Length Femme Fatale from the 1940′s hairstyle book pdf I found on line. I’ll definitely get that setting gel to try and see how it works with my new hair. Have a great day!

Ah! This is exactly what I needed…my hair doesn’t curl easily either and since I finally did a brunette “Marilyn Monroe” bob (yep! I did it!) I’ve got to find some way to curl it!

I’ve been having the hardest time curling my hair with heat recently; definitely going to try this.

I love her tips for people with fine hair, since I have the same issue, and your tutorials are great! They’ve been added to my bookmarks and I can’t wait to try them.

A tip I’ve been using is that if you do pin curls over night on damp hair and then brush it out it really gives the volume to get a lot of these styles need.

Wow, she’s such an inspiration! I’m terribly excited about the setting lotion tip and am going to make a trip to Sally’s asap. :) Thanks for featuring her, Casey!

btw- this new edit comment feature is a dream! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished I could edit a comment and add another thought, instead of having to leave another entire comment and end up looking like a crazie. :)

Looks great! I use setting lotion pretty much every time I set with hot rollers now, but it took me AGES to find some. It is a hard product to get a hold of these days and the new versions have nowhere near the hold of the good old stuff my grandma used to use. Mind you I don’t know what that did to her hair!
I must see if I can find Christine’s recommended product here in Australia.

Thank you ever so much for taking time to share your comment! Although I try to answer questions, I am not always able to respond to each comment individually. But please know that I appreciate from the bottom of my heart every comment I receive!
