Hello, everyone! As I sit here preparing this post (Thursday evening), I have one of my favorite films, Sunset Boulevard playing in the background. I have lately been going through a re-watching binge with many of my favorite movies (and a few new to me); mostly because we don’t have cable, so I can’t flick on the television to Turner Classic Movies whenever I need a fix. lol! The library has definitely become my best friend… So far this week (I usually have music, a podcast, or a movie in the background while I go about my daily chores and work; I hate quiet! So it’s not like I waste my days in front of the television…) I’ve watched Sunset Boulevard, Goldiggers of 1933, The Seven Year Itch, Whirlpool, The Night of the Iguana, The Bridges at Toko-Ri, and We’re Not Married. Definitely have a classic movie addiction problem… haha!
So, my dears: what are your 5 favorite older films (pre-1970)? Every time I’m sure I’ve seen it all, something new pops up to catch my fancy (it helps that so many films are being released on dvd now!). Tell me what your favorites are–I’d love to know!

- I recently found a delightful new-to-me blog (via a reader comment!) called Pincurls.
- Fun beach fashions from the 1930s.
- I’m dying to try this look next time I go to a bbq! It’s perfectly tropical and summery.
- A bit late for my b-day cupcake extravaganza, but check out these darling (free!) cupcake tags from Creature Comforts!
- A fantastic plan for livening up a closet into the perfect studio space.
Have a lovely weekend!

Love the inspirations, particularly all the blues and pinks and reds… such a nice colour selection.
Movies I have recently been obsessed with include:
1. Brief Encounter
2. All About Eve
3. Vertigo
4. All Along The Waterfront
5. A Matter Of Life And Death
And they all seem to have MUCH more rounded and reaslistic female characters than you often see portrayed in modern movies…
I LOVE the inspiration! Especially the striped top worn by the girl in the middle… cute collar on that.
Oh, you’re certainly NOT the only one with an old movie addiction!!!!! Do I have to limit myself to list only five? No fair!
1. Jimmie Stewart’s “The Glenn Miller Story”
2. Danny Kaye’s “A Song Is Born”
3. Betty Hutton’s “Annie Get You Gun”
4. Howard Keel in “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers”
5. Jimmie Stewart’s “The Shop Around The Corner”
And, any Jimmie Stewart movie, actually… he’s my all-time favorite actor!
What an enchanting selection of beautiful photos!
It’s never easy to whittle down favourite classic movies (or books), is it? A few of the ones I never, ever tire of watching (they are quite eclectic, but I think that personifies my taste in general ;D) are:
* La dolce vita (quite possibly the best Italian film of all time, IMO)
* White Christmas
* Roman Holiday
* How Green is My Valley
* Meet Me in St. Louis
(Now I’m itching to watch a classic or two this weekend!)
Wishing you bright & beautiful Friday,
♥ Jessica
I love old movies! It’s so hard to narrow it down to just a few though. I think right now my top favorites would be:
1. Penny Serenade. Makes me cry everytime.
2. This is the Army. Have to have some military movies in my list since I spent ten years in the Guard!
3. I Was a Male War Bride.
4. Meet John Doe.
5. White Christmas. My all-time favorite Christmas movie…I watch it all year round!
I could go on and on!
Oh dear. I’d best bow out of the movie listing … I’m a thoroughly modern movie-lover!
Loved Freelancer’s Aloha twirl tutorial – she is just so skilled with hairstyling.
I recommend seeing the haunting Bogart and Bacall in Dark Passages, and of all the Fred and Ginger movies, I think my current favorite is Shall We Dance. Funny Face, A Hard Day’s Night, The Thin Man.
I’m obsessed with all things classic, just like you, especially the movies! I’m a film major and I write about Classical Hollywood for just about every paper. My favorite movie of all time is “Singin’ In the Rain”, followed by “On The Town”, “West Side Story”, “An American In Paris”, and “The Postman Always Rings Twice”…the last one doesn’t quite fit in but noir is amazing
Great inspiration pics as always Casey
Im not sure about my top five, I’m ill-educated in this area. I love the classics like ‘Breakfast at Tiffanys’ and ‘Guys and dolls’. I love ‘Niagara’ with Marilyn Monroe. But my favourite has to be ‘South Pacific’.
My boyfriend and his mum introduced me to to it a few months ago, and the tunes are always stuck in my head!

ANYthing Cagney. Public Enemy? or White Heat?
ooh. I LOVE him!
Cannot resist to start commenting at your blog with my favourites:
1. Die Drei von der Tankstelle (1932, Germany)
2. Bringing up Baby (1938)
3. Bluebeard`s Eighth wife (1938)
4. Ninotchka (1939)
5. It happened one night (1934)
Well, these are my 5 30ies favourites …
Continue writing your blog, it is so friendly, fresh and lovely!
Another Cagney fan! This makes me happy, since I love him too and I feel he doesn’t get enough love these days. I’m generally a fan of the ’30s, especially gangsters and musicals, though I also really love some David Lean films from later.
The Public Enemy
Footlight Parade
The Thin Man
Top Hat
Lawrence of Arabia
I have so many favorites.. but ‘Gun Crazy’ is a great movie from 1950, if you have not seen it.. its a must!
West Side Story is one of my favorite musicals/films of all time. And of course, anything with Marilyn Monroe. She had such a magnetic screen presence.
1. Casablanca
2. Sunset Blvd
3. It’s a Gift (W.C. Fields)
4. How to Marry a Millionaire
5. Jezebel
Hi Casey!
Here are some of my favorites:
1. Desk Set
2. Roman Holiday
3. Charade
4. Vertigo
5. Rebecca
(Honorable Mentions: How To Steal A Million, Spellbound, and Funny Face)
As you can tell, I am a big fan of both Alfred Hitchcock and Audrey Hepburn. Pity they never made a movie together! (I don’t think they did?)
have a great weekend!
I love old movies too and I’ve already seen some faves on others’ comments. Here are a few more of mine:
To Kill a Mockingbird (1961) Gregory Peck
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) Capra (director), Cary Grant
Holiday (1938) Hepburn, Grant and Lew Ayres
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) Lew Ayres (again!)
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) Bogart, Walter Houston
Most anything by Hitchcock
I have recently come across your fantastic blog, I especially enjoy your inspiring outfit posts!
1. Vertigo
2. Mildred Pierce
3. Imitation of Life (Sirk,1959)
4. Sunset Boulevard
5. West Side Story
(I’ve been reading your blog for a while, but this is my first comment.)
Love the Flickr Faves this week, I’m on a pastel high at the moment. Five of my all time classic favorites (I just got hooked on classic movies) are:
1) Rear Window
2) Roman Holiday
3) Anchors Aweigh
4) Psycho
5) Broadway Melody of 1940
Great inspiration! Those sound like great films to watch for the weekend! It’s hard to narrow it down, but here’s what I could think of off the top of my head:
Meet Me in St. Louis
Auntie Mame
Pride and Prejudice (the one with Greer Garson)
Margie (with Jeanne Crain; it’s really rare but it’s really good! I think they may have it on Youtube?)
The Major and the Minor (Ginger Rogers is hilarious!)
Have you seen any of these? Which five are your favorites?
Imitation of life, (1934), is definitly one of my favorites
It’s always nice to find another classic movie fan. All of my friends just don’t understand the desire to watch old movies. Ah well;
a few of my faves;
High Noon – Gary Cooper is the best
Best Years of Our Lives – never fails to make me sob
Rear Window – never tire of it. stella is hilarious
The Misfits – Marilyn Monroe breaks my heart in it, her best work (I think)
The Great Escape – I know what happens, but it still keeps me on the edge of my seat.
I quite like “stand by me”. so if you haven’t seen it – do! it’s not old per se, but it’s set in the 50′s. with river phoenix:) Also, if you like period pieces, you should watch brideshead revisited (the series is better than the new film). it’s such a beautiful story with so many interesting aspects that one thinks about afterwards; religion, social climbing, relationships, everything! i’m actually writing my bachelor thesis on it! So i’d recommend that:)
oh, and anything with audrey hepburn of course.
First of all, I just love that photo in the upper right – the one with the door. That is just wonderful!
I can’t resist on the movies.
I like Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffanys, Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz and Blue Velvet.
I dont like to do chores when it’s quiet either so I always have a dvd or music in the background. Since I don’t have cable either.
Hmm…5 favorite oldies?
Gone With the Wind
Snake Pit
The Bad Seed
Street Car Named Desire
Wuthering Heights (1939 version)
Sunset Boulevard is up there for sure! Maybe also It Happened One Night. Uh, Swingtime, The Third Man, Double Indemnity .. . . Too hard!!!!
some of my favourites at the moment are pillow talk and Lover come back- blatantly sexist and stupid, but funny anyway. Also all that heaven allows is great. One of my all time favourites is Adams rib, and I couldn’t pass up You’ll never get rich with lovely rita hayworth! Oh and buster keaton’s College.
Only five?
Camelot! My favourite musical EVER <3
Singing in the Rain
Carousel (my boyfriend doesn’t believe that this is where Liverpool’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone comes from xD)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Oklahoma!
(yes, all 5 are musicals, and if I was allowed ten, then all ten would probably be musicals too… hehe)
I love that you mention Gold Diggers of 33 – that is such a fun movie. Along the same strand, I also love Dames but my favourite is Footlight Parade. I just adore Joan Blondell. Another musical from that era that I love, although it’s completely different in style, is Love Me Tonight. It’s an absolute masterpiece.
I watch old films all the time and I’m trying to think of ones that you might not have seen but it will be a struggle! Recently I watched a great little comedy thriller called Green For Danger. Such a fun film. I also loved Genevieve which I watched for the first time the other week. So charming! And some others I’ve been watching of late include the Thin Man titles and the Andy Hardy series. And basically any early 30s melodrama. Anything with Joan Crawford is always fun; likewise with Norma Shearer.
I need to do a film post on my blog
My list is too long.
Ohh, this is such a good question!
1) Singin’ in the Rain (I love love LOVE Gene Kelly)
2) It’s a Wonderful Life (And Jimmy Stewart, too)
3) White Christmas
4) An American in Paris
5) Annie Get Your Gun
I used to work in a video store…and I loved that so many movies in the classics section were really clean, b/c then I could play them on the monitors during the day. Even some movies that had kissing or love scenes were so discreet that I wasn’t worried I’d get sued by a customer or something, lol. The movie Australia (Kidman, Jackman) has a sort of old timey feel…a throwback to the movie making of the 30s & 40s. No jiggly hand held cameras, long looks at facial expression & emotion. I know the movie got bad reviews (it was REALLY long), but when I realized what the style was, I enjoyed it a little more than if I hadn’t seen it at all.
cute blog!
Oh my! Just five?
The Philadelphia Story has to be my all-time favourite: seeing Hepburn, Grant and Stewart together is beautiful!
To Have and Have Not: awesome chemistry between Bogie and Bacall AND music from Hoagy Carmichael
It Happened One Night: I can’t believe Colbert and Gable only did one movie together, there seemed to be magic between them in that film
Vertigo: haunting, intriguing, and you just have to watch it again and again (mainly to understand it!)
Notorious: can’t get tired of watching Grant and Bergman together, and it’s such a great story. And Rains is sooo creepy!
Such an exciting question, but so hard to answer!
Here’s some of my favorites, though:
The Women (1939)
The Quiet Man (1952)
Love is A Many-Splendored Thing (1955)
His Kind of Woman (1951)
The Narrow Margin (1952)
I see you watched The Night of the Iguana. Isn’t it a surprisingly good film? I wasn’t expecting it to be so engaging when I watched for the first time.
top 5 old films? ooooooh!
- Roman Holiday / Funny Face – can never decide which I prefer…
- Letter from an Unknown Woman
- A Streetcar named Desire
- Raffles
- Blowup
