sweet roses

04.29.09 {sweet roses}

I’ve been sewing again. I’m in desperate need of some new basics, and well… garments in general to liven up my whittled-down wardrobe! Preferably projects that utilize patterns and materials that I already have (thus to stem my inability to say no to vintage patterns in shops and online). This sweet little number I whipped up in a few hours from a late 1930s DuBarry pattern I purchased years ago (I think it’s one of my first vintage patterns, in fact!). The fabric is a really beautiful remnant of cotton I found at the DC Big Flea last summer, and had just enough to squeeze this out of it.

I made a few modifications, namely the sleeves. I’m not too fond of the puffed sleeve style illustrated on the envelope; gathering at the bottom edge always makes me feel uncomfortable and too “little girlish”. I actually swapped those out for a modified version of the bolero sleeves! The neckline was another little alteration on my part, simply because high, round necks look silly on me. lol!

Now I just need to make some new skirts so I have something to wear this with… (And finish the side closure too!)

Be sure to keep your eyes open for Giveaway #2; I’ll be posting it this evening!

Lena (fröken lila) April 29, 2009 at 11:49

sewing is so much fun! the thing is just that i always get stuck somewhere in the middle and almost never finish anything.. you don’t happen to know any trick on some extra motivation?

Anabela April 29, 2009 at 11:52

Gorgeous fabric, gorgeous blouse… you are incredible! I love the slight modification you made to the sleeves.

Quincy April 29, 2009 at 12:00

I love it! You did a wonderful job! :o )

Sarai April 29, 2009 at 12:01

I love the fabric (you know I LOVE roses!), but that teeny collar is killing me! so cute.

Jennifer April 29, 2009 at 12:07

Good to see that you’re sewing again. :) Great job on the blouse!

marjorie April 29, 2009 at 12:10

oh Casey! It’s SO dreamy!! Is that vintage fabric?? Lawn? It looks so light and airy!! Perfect for Florida!! :) Oh deary me, but I do need to get into my little fabric stash to actually ‘sew’! tee hee! :)

jen April 29, 2009 at 12:30

well now, what can i say, i’m speechless really! it’s gorgeous, you’ve done a fantastic job. i thought this was something you scored at a vintage shop! the fabric is so pretty, yay for there being enough! i’m so glad to see you sewing again and look forward to see MORE. you’ve inspired me to get on those vintage patterns i have, lol.

it’s funny, i went into a couple of “regular” shops yesterday while running errands and i look at the clothes i used to be interested in and i think, bleh, i can just make something far more lovely at home. so that saves me money at least! but now, i just need to actually make something again. :)

I wish I knew how to do that as well :)

Erin April 29, 2009 at 12:42

I love it! That fabric is wonderfully summery.

anja louise April 29, 2009 at 13:02

It looks perfect! I love the alterations you made too, the sleeves are so much better than the pattern. I love the little bows too!

Sacaton June April 29, 2009 at 13:07

oh i love the print! it’s so pretty. i’m awed (and a little jealous) of your ability to whip up something so pretty in just a couple hours!

Caitlin April 29, 2009 at 13:13

So cute! Are you going to put a side zip in or buttons?

Maegan April 29, 2009 at 13:23

It’s very sweet!

Sal April 29, 2009 at 13:44

elise April 29, 2009 at 15:26

What a sweet little blouse and a great pattern! Just curious– how did you learn how to sew?

Anna Allen April 29, 2009 at 15:41

Brinja April 29, 2009 at 15:45

That fabric is beautiful… And I love the little bows:)

Roxy April 29, 2009 at 16:51

Great shirt! I could never pull something like this off! I’m sure it’s gonna look beautiful on you!

Frankie - Swell Vintage April 29, 2009 at 17:00

Wow, Casey! That’s amazing! I just bought a sewing machine myself – wish me luck (I WILL need it) x

Tina C. April 29, 2009 at 17:30

Gorgeous new blouse! I love the fabric and the modification you made to the pattern, especially the neckline/collar — so darling!

Livy April 29, 2009 at 18:49

You are so talented Casey! This is just the prettiest thing.

Laura April 29, 2009 at 18:53

That fabric is fantastic. Great find!

Sam April 29, 2009 at 19:16

This is absolutely lovely! I’m usually a big quilter and sewer of accessories, methinks I must give these vintage patterns a whirl.

thevintageyear April 29, 2009 at 22:04

I can’t believe you made that (with modifications) in a few HOURS! You are really talented! I would’ve taken way longer (with much cursing and seam ripping in the meantime, of course, lol)

whimsykid April 29, 2009 at 22:37

As always, your sewing skills and speed amaze me! I always take sooo long to do a project (unless it’s something ridiculously easy) or else rush and garble everything up. The bows are sweet!

Lauren April 29, 2009 at 22:46

Oh my gosh! SOO Cute! That fabric is too perfect, too. I heart the thirties.

Shayla April 30, 2009 at 00:33

that turned out amazing!!! sew me one PLZ!
:)
super cute.

Dusky April 30, 2009 at 04:10

It’s beautiful! The neckline and sleeves look superb too! I think altering patterns is one of the biggest joys of making your own clothes.
This will look amazing with a skirt!
xx

NoirGirl April 30, 2009 at 06:04

The blouse is gorgeous! I love the alterations you made – the neckline in particular. Are the little bows sewn on?

I chuckled at your comments about puff sleeves because I often feel the same way. They always remind me of Marion Davies in all of her Hearst made clothes! :) Happily, though you found a lovely compromise.

Christina May 4, 2009 at 16:55

Absolutely beautiful!

Nadja June 3, 2009 at 05:22
