Before I moved, my favorite vintage dealer told me that Florida thrifting can be a gold mine if you look hard enough. Something about all the people that retire here and then get rid of decades of stuff. Honestly, my first couple of thrift outings here were disappointing, and I started to wonder if perhaps this part of Florida was just not that exciting on the thrifting front. But, after last week when Mom and I hit a few in the space of an afternoon, I definitely feel my confidence renewed! I didn’t purchase a ton (there was lots to choose from, but I’m trying to keep in mind my limited storage space), but what I did snag I love! I bought a few things to list for sale: a 90s floral sundress (I like it, but that look I wore the first time around, and it makes me feel weird to wear something I did when I was a kid!) and a pretty 80s yellow dress. Then the goodies for me: a pair of brightly patterned pants (new not vintage; I hemmed them to a 50s clam digger length!), a burnt orange linen dress (gorgeous!) and my favorite: a 1960s brown wool coat with fur collar! Now, I know that in Florida it is highly unlikely I’ll ever wear this (save for the occasional winter hockey game), but I’ve been on the hunt for this sort of coat for a while. I love the rich, red-toned brown too. The piece is in excellent condition, with only a minor fraying near the top of the back coat collar (easily hide-able by tacking up the fur collar). Best yet, I got it for a mere $6! Hurrah!

I’m all excited to do some more thrifting in the coming months. The idea that there are more treasures awaiting discovery is thrilling! Have you found any dynamite fashion finds lately?

If you eve don’t want those shoes, I’m your girl :) They are beautiful!! I was just curious about your move and whether you knew anyone there when you moved. I love the thought of going somewhere brand new where you don’t know anyone but its also a little daunting. Next year David and I are going to be leaving NZ for somewhere (who knows at this stage) so its scary and exciting :) Also just wondering if you are still studying or if you are working now :)

Ohh they are some lovely finds! The brown coat is especially great… something like that would be perfect in the bitter chill of the British winter (which is now turning into spring :D )
I’ve not been thrifting in AGES (at least a month, possibly more – just not had the time!) so haven’t found anything exciting lately. But, I’ve discovered there are some jumble sales on Saturday around my area & am hopefully going to those. It’s a bit hit & miss though, so we’ll see what there is.

marvelous finds! I wish I could squeeze into that yellow one! Sadly, vintage shops are a little lacking in the bigger sizes, boohoo. LoL
And if your guy is in the Navy, you may end up somewhere cool enough for hat gorgeous coat soon enough!
Mazeltov!

I grew up in Florida (Atlantic Beach) and have always thought that Florida thrift stores are the absolute best, especially if you drive to little towns in the middle of nowhere!

Those are great sundresses! I love the yellow one especially, and I know you’ll look great in that red one- whenever you have a red outfit they just look so amazing! I went to some antique malls today and found a super cute 60′s summer dress, can’t wait to take photos of it. :)

I’m so jealous! Our thrift stores never carry such great items. That brown coat is to die for and I’m always searching for one like that. Unfortunately, whenever I do find one the shop always wants a ton of money for it.

Wow those shoes are super! I can’t wait to see you wear them! Ooh and the brown coat – you’re going to look lovely in that. Maybe you could turn the a/c up real high and pretend it’s winter, just so you can wear it. ;)

I love everything in the first picture! What a steal for that coat, too!

Thrift shopping here in San Diego can be iffy — there are a LOT of fairly well established vintage stores (both brick & mortar and ebay/etsy) that seem to pick over a lot of the good vintage, unfortunately.

It’s been a while since I last went thrifting, but the last estate sale I went to (last year, I think) I scored a couple pairs of vintage (unused) silk seamed stockings for only a couple dollars.

Love your finds! I still have yet to find an opshop that stocks things that are older than the 80s (ack!). You have inspired me – I am off to a secound-hand market tomorrow and hopefully an opshop! :)

When I went to Savers last 50% off sale I had the uncanny good luck of finding three vintage Vera scarves! Lately, not so much luck as the Quebec thrift stores are a little weird.

That orange dress is beautiful!

Loving your thrifty finds!! Especially that fab coat – what a bargain!!

There is an award for you over on my blog, if you’d like to take a peek. :)

That dress must be PERFECT on you! It’s got “Casey” written all over it.

Jess March 20, 2009 at 10:51

Out of curiosity, what general area of FL have you had your luck in thrifting? I just moved to the Palm Beach area this month, but have yet to come across anything really worthwhile. I guess I just need to be a little more patient. :)

Next time I’m in Florida, I’m taking an extra trunk just for raiding thrift stores. You Floridians make me green with thrifting envy!!

anna March 21, 2009 at 10:09

I love theese shoes!

verhext March 26, 2009 at 14:21

I too feel strange about the 90′s revival — something that was made AFTER I graduated high school should not be vintage!! Yikes!!!!

I love that yellow dress, though!
