brightest fear

03.24.09 {brightest fear}

You would think that a gal who has a penchant for brightly colored clothes, 4″+ heels and wears red lipstick on a daily basis wouldn’t have a lip color she was scared of, right? Well, a couple weeks ago I stopped in at the M.A.C. store looking for some pink lipstick: something spring/summerish, pretty and definitely a bit of a take-off from my normal retro red lip color. Pink for me is one of those “iffy” colors: I tend to be on the fence about wearing bright pink on my lips. My nails and eyelids are one thing, but for some reason I think it always looks goofy on me in lip color form! I did end up buying some lipstick in “Chatterbox” and a cremestick liner in “Cranapple” (I love the liner; it’s great under gloss!). But the lipstick sat in the bag for nearly two weeks before I had the guts to pull it out and try it myself.

It’s taking me a little while to get used to: I’m not used to something bright pink on my lips! (I know: it really isn’t logical! lol) But am rather drawn to the look: it reminds me of those brightly patterned Lilly Pulitzer dresses I’ve seen in shops. Or old ladies with their neon lip colors. Or perhaps it just tickles my own eccentric whims!

So tell me: is there a makeup color that you’re rather terrified of using? Or am I just the only silly one… lol!

Wow..It looks fabulous! I wish I had full lips like yours. I’m afraid to wear lipstick in general, because my lips aren’t full enough. Ha, I’m probably being so dumb! ;o)

I have a bright orange nars lip color. it’s scary but amazing.

i love love LOVE this color on you.

My friend Rachel used to wear bright, bright fuchsia lipstick and it looked AMAZING on her. I don’t think I could ever pull it off with my coloring though.

Sal March 24, 2009 at 17:46

Well, if it’s any help that shade is stunning on you.

Eunice March 24, 2009 at 19:36

That particular shade looks really pretty on you! But on me it would look horrible! I have tan skin and it would look really bright on me. The shade of pink that looks good on me is Clinique’s pink chocolate.

As much as I love red lipstick, I am hesitant to wear it because I feel like my teeth don’t look white enough, and it draws so much attention to my mouth (obviously) :)

Meg March 24, 2009 at 21:16

You look so cute! I love the pink. I don’t usually wear lipstick on a daily basis because I have a large scar on my top lip from a bad accident and like Jiji, I’d rather not put a highbeam on it :P Good for you for facing your fear — it’s darling!

I think it looks quite sweet on you – glad you have it another chance! I don’t think I can pull off any lipstick, it just me look like a pre-teen trying to be ‘mature’. haha

For some reason I am getting an urge to wear thick glossy forest green (with no AB finish) nail polish. Tacky, eh?

I share your fear of pinky pink lips. They make me think of perma tanned old Florida ladies. But I do however, love a bright fuchsia. I wear Avon’s Amethyst as a fav. Basically it has to be a vampy pink rather than a girly pink for me.

I have the same fear–bright pink lipstick. For some reason I think it makes my teeth look yellowy.

Poppy March 25, 2009 at 07:06

I have that lipstick! It is my “tame” pink one though, I have Impassioned as well, which is much brighter. I also have a dark hot pink one by Napoleon Perdis called Calypso. I’m not really afraid of bright colours though, because I have fluorescent pink hair…

Actually, pink is my FAVORITE color lipstick! The problem is finding the right one. I really like the one you’ve got in the photo. My problem is when I find a good shade of it, it has that shimmery effect in it, which is not at all what I want.
I’m not afraid of red lipstick, but I just can’t wear it unless my hair is done!

Jessi March 25, 2009 at 10:14

I’m afraid of all eye colors that arn’t shades of brown, for fear that I would look like a clown or worse Mimi from The Drew Carey Show!!!

But your lipstick is very pretty on you! The color reminds me of pictures of my mom from the 60′s.

Noir Girl March 25, 2009 at 10:30

I think you look great with the pink! I can’t see any reason to fear pink any more. :)

On the rare special occasions when I wear lipstick, I am kind of afraid of wearing red. I have fair skin that can look almost pale at times, and I fear the red making me look clownish. If I’m not feeling adventurous, I’ll stick with pink. Although, I agree with Alyssa when she says she hates the shimmery pinks. I just want a plain glossy one.

Amanda March 25, 2009 at 11:25

I’m terrified to wear red lipstick. I have a million tubes, b/c I love it, but I just don’t have the guts to wear it in public.

whimsykid March 25, 2009 at 13:39

I think the pink looks awesome on you– you’re able to pull it off really well without looking the slightest bit garish (which is quite a feat!). For me, wearing any kind of really bold makeup is already nerve-racking, because I have a really young-kiddie face so it just looks weird to me most of the time…

Ruby LaMour March 25, 2009 at 13:50

eyeshadow of any color but nude. totally freaks me out. I feel like it makes my brown eyes look black. not very flattering.

if you’re looking for a good pink i recommend NARS “schiap” from Sephora. don’t be alarmed, it looks really bright in the tube but once on its actually really pretty. it would look lovely with your fair skin, which is why i wear it as well.

Frankie - Swell Vintage March 25, 2009 at 15:53

That colour really suits you x

Alyssa March 25, 2009 at 18:32

Wet n Wild has a couple of shades I really like, but they never seem to be in stock (I guess that’s a credit to their popularity!) Other than that I have yet to buy one. Maybe I’ll treat myself this weekend :D

I bet that “Schiap” by NARS, as mentioned by Ruby is for sure named after Schiaparelli, since she basically invented pink as we know it.

Courtney March 26, 2009 at 19:45

Fantastic shade.
MAC is my favorite cosmetic company, followed by Urban Decay & then Too Faced…but MAC definitely makes the best lipsticks. :)
looks lovely on you!

denise March 27, 2009 at 19:32

Chatterbox is one of my favorite pinks. Love it! It’s flattering. It’s stylish!

Nichola March 28, 2009 at 06:53

I just wish i had the guts to wear lipstick at all! I’ve not worn it for about 12 years or so, i don’t even own a lipstick! Infact i rarely wear much makeup, i feel uncomfortable in it. I wish i didn’t.

Tara April 6, 2009 at 12:10

This color looks stunning on you, really! You picked a great shade for your skintone and hair color! Gorgeous…you are making me curious to try a brighter pink now!

Jolie Musick April 16, 2009 at 14:43

I have the exact same fear! For some reason I have no problem at all wearing red everyday but pink is terrifying.

Sarah March 15, 2010 at 11:34

I hope you don’t mind me posting on here almost a year after the post, but that pink is so pretty I couldn’t resist!

I came across your blog whilst hunting for ’50s make up ideas for my wedding in July and I’m so tempted by that MAC lipstick now. If you don’t mind me asking, what eye make up are you wearing in that shot? Looks like liquid eyeliner, but wondering whether you’ve got a sheer pink eyeshadow on too.
