Sometimes the design process is very straight-forward and easy. Other times, not so much! Yesterday I was browsing through the new, Anthropologie catalog when I spotted this beautiful top. I love how the lace is arranged on the front, and the dramatic scoop neck. I had a striped tshirt I thrifted a month ago, that was needing to be redesigned anyway. So I started to work on it, arranging some vintage lace from my stash on the front.

But then the little design “rabbit trails” started to emerge: should I do the lace bib, or a peter pan collar with a big bow instead? How about a ruffle? Or maybe a modified sailor-style collar would be cute! I kind of like the look of the lace on the stripe, but I’m also smitten by the sketch I did of the collar/bow combination. Oh the Design Agony!

This is how many of my refashions go: I get started, and often times am bogged down as the plans are altered, either by force of circumstances (such as the fabric not cooperating, or mis-cutting something), or just whims (like this one). Occasionally in all this I feel that it’s akin to being at the eye doctor’s when they have you looking through various lenses to see which is sharper: choice 1, or 2? *sigh*
For the record: I decided to go with the lace, Anthropologie-inspired version. As Mom pointed out: I already had a collared tshirt (though I argued that one can never have too many of a good thing!)… Now I just need to stitch everything down!!

your shirt is way cute!
Yet another awesome refashion, Casey! I must agree that the Anthropologie top is lovely, and I have a similar striped top that is begging to be redone in this manner. Thanks for the inspiration!
the lace is gorgeous!
LOVE the 40s poses from the previous post, you crack me up
Lovely- great shot, too.
Ooh. They’re both too cute. The wide collar and bow might look better on a wider stripe anyway?
Ha. I say this sitting in my workout clothes and wet hair. I’m hardly a fashion plate right now! LMSO.
I’m a bow addict (my Alice in Wonderland’s complex). So…
Both ideas are amazing @_@ I would be under utter turmoil over the decision (though I usually am)… but I think the best thing would be, go with what you already have started… and then find another t-shirt to use the bow idea with.
Well, there’s my “logic” – but anything you go with, I know, will be great!!!
The shirt looks very cute – it is certainly anthropology-esque. And I know what you mean with design dilemmas, as well as trying to decide exactly which eye-doctor-exam-image is the sharpest, haha!
i just got myself something very much like this on ebay! can’t wait until it’s washed so i can wear it…
personally, i think that a bow AND lace would be a bit too much, so why not try a peter pan collar without that bow?
Great idea! Looks wonderful!
The lace is so lovely! I rather like how it is at the moment, but the bow version would look good too. I occasionally do that too, rethinking the design, it really can become a pickle sometimes!
Too sweet! Actually, both versions combined remind me of this top, which I’ve had in my inspiration files waiting for a refashion! Now I just need to find the right materials. I certainly can relate to your struggle, though – indecision is my worst flaw (maybe).
